Russia: 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Eruption in Shiveluch Volcano

The Shiveluch volcano erupted in eastern Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula on August 18 after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the region. The volcanic eruption reportedly spurted a column of ashes and smoke 5 kilometres into the air and triggered a brief “code red” warning for the aircraft. The volcano is around 450 kilometres away from the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. According to the reports, no major damage was caused by the quake. Russian authorities have not issued a tsunami warning. However, earlier, the US tsunami warning system had warned against “hazardous waves”. Scientists have warned against a potential more severe earthquake in the region.
