When he said “defeat the handler” I thought that would be followed by “once the handlers dead…” lol

I was 100% down to have a gunfight with the handler. Was not expecting to low crawl 500 meters thru brush

The sound of a drone hunting you must be 10 times more terrifying than a dog ?!

In SERE school a friend of mine shit in some leaves and threw it down a ravine... the tracking dog went wild pulling the handler off the edge and he got pretty banged up in the fall down the cliff. I laughed my ass off.

SOG 1-0 training course on evading NVA trackers.

In our operational areas the enemy employs highly skilled trackers. These are usually people who are native to the area and extremely familiar with the local terrain. If they can pick up your trail and determine the direction of travel, their familiarity of area will allow them to use a parallel trail to get ahead of you and assist the local unit in setting up an ambush, and just lie in wait for you. As a general rule they will not follow your trail directly or too close. They will travel off to the side and far enough back to be out of sight, but within hearing distance. If they can’t get ahead of you, they will track you to your RON site, then one will go back and guide a larger, heavily armed unit to overrun your RON site. You have to always be aware of the possibility of trackers and take the necessary precautions.

On the other side, even though there’s a good chance you have trackers, don’t let that panic you into taking unnecessary risks. You may occasionally run into tracker dogs. The dogs are not as big a threat as the human trackers. The dogs are usually not well trained and tend to bark, alerting you they are there. There are several things to deter the dogs such as powdered CS, pepper mixed with dried blood, etc. During the movement techniques phase, we’ll talk about ways to evade, elude, and possibly eliminate trackers. Although it may be close to impossible to not leave some evidence of your passing through the area, the important objective is to make it as difficult as possible for the enemy to detect your trail. The more difficult you make it, the more likely they will make an error and if you know they are there you can take appropriate actions.

I read a book that was a collection of lrrp stories from Vietnam. When the 4 man team knew they had dogs on them the broke open a cs grenade and sprinkled the crystals on the ground. A while later they heard the dogs yelping a few hundred meters behind them.

I used to do airsoft and sometimes we’d have a “stealth night” where off duty cops would come in with their dogs and role play guards shit was really fun

I was evading a helicopter + off road vehicles and multiple pursuers with dogs. Luckily this was at night in wild lands. Outsmarting the handler was how I was able to escape capture.

Put yourself in the enemies shoes and be where they are certain that you won't be. I accomplished this by getting into water upstream of a bridge that was on the edge of what I ascertained to be their perimeter. Moved down the river and crossed under the bridge right under their noses. This side of the perimeter was in an inconvenient direction for me, so also unexpected on their part, and did cost me an hour+ on foot. It was worth it though because this area was much less accessible to vehicles and had more overhead cover. By the time I heard dogs again I was too far away for them to catch up. No idea how I beat the IR in the helicopters, perhaps a bad operator + they wanted me alive.

I once ran tru a swamp in FL to get away from a dog, running so fast I scared away an aligator, the water exploded in front of me as I saw his tail get away. I keep running and once safe and calm realized I had pick a 50/50 eaten by an alligator gamble vs 100% dog bite.
