Like you said, having a custom sump you can fit it to your liking and depending on the gear that you want to use. I also like the fact that having custom fitting lids does really cut down on evaporation.

Himali is my favorite sump. Red Sea reef mat, refugium, and 57 watt aqua violet uv. Most likely never be able to afford one. But a Reefer can dream

I much prefer the open sump, as they tend to be more "future proof".
Your tank needs can and probably will change as the tank ages. With the open design, you can shift stuff over, move stuff around, and basically cram it full of junk.

As far as the lids go... Just add 6" wide acrylic lids that span from front to back, with a finger hole. You'll have several lids that you can move or alter as needed. That would help on the evaporation, a little.

I will say that the only advantage to a store bought or custom sump, versus a standard glass tank as a sump... is the looks. Some of the store bought or custom sumps look amazing. Mine is housed under a really nice custom cabinet with doors... so the standard glass tank doesn't bother me at all.

I think most people are more impressed with the "automation" of the tank when I pop the hood, than the looks of the sump tank.

Awesome videos. Ask. Did you ever use grape caulerpa? I get it to grow fast but i dont see any changes in phosphates or nitrates. Been running for like 3 years. Tank been running 6 years.

I like the idea of coral in the sump it’s kind of cool kind of dual purpose if you will

I keep tropical freshwater fish and I am looking into setting a nano reef to learn. I thought MY fluval cannister filter for freshwater was complicated 😂😂😂 I haven’t started with the reef aquarium and I wanna give up already 🤣🤣🤣

I really like that optical sensor on the skimmer. Do you know of one that has the wire external to the cup that has a FMM plug? Searching for the one in the video, I assume its the hydros one

Is the cover for the dirty roll to reduce the smell? I have the RedSea roller and the musty smell is an issue, I have been using a fan to try to dry it out to reduce the smell.
