Could do with information on the actual tank holes? Does everyone drill their own tanks as it seems uncommon when I look online for aquariums with holes pre drilled. It also seems 4 holes is best but on the aquariums I do see pre drilled, there is often only 2 but the suction can get blocked and them the tank overflows

I had a canister running on my 30 gal for about a year and will never use one again. I’m a bit of a “lazy” reefer, doing water changes every other week and it seems that the canister served as a huge cause of nitrates. Most would be better off with a 10 or 20L tank adding baffles or finding a used sump.

Is there any rational ideal for use of space? Example, socks or roller 20%, refrugium 20%, skimmer 20%, media 30%, return pump area 10%?

I’s add to the sump benefits that it can serve as a frag. “grow out area, ” aggressive fish sequestration area, or plant farm.

funny thing is i have a 20gal sump with a roller, refugium, a custom sand bed filter, ato, all on a 10gal fresh water planted tank lol

Ive stopped using anything but sumps freah or saltwater. Easier to clean and drilling tanks has gotten very easy, make my own overflow boxes and by weirs from modular marine. I just built a 3500 gph capable overflow for a grand total of 75$

Canister filters can store so much more CO2 inside them than a Sump, and thats a very important part of the reefing succes!!.
