As part of my slow descent into madness, I find myself trawling eBay looking for a 2013 "trash can" Mac Pro... not because I need one, or because it makes any kind of practical sense in 2024... what is it about this iconic Mac that keeps me coming back for more punishment?!

I did the same. I bought one for 230, - and upgraded it by myself with a 8 Core CPU :D Not because I needed one, but because I wanted one :D

It's the enclosure the M3 Ultra deserves today. The thermal limits aren't an issue with M-series chips.

It’s a shame they never used this design for the Mac Studio, so much more interesting than an enlarged Mac Mini.

I recently bought one to replace a 2012 Mac Mini that I gave away to my friends. It's amazing. I'm running it with dual monitors (4K & 2.5K), a Thunderbolt 3 dock (from TDB2 to TDB3), and it has 8 cores, 32gb RAM, 1TB SSD, and the D500s. Got it for $315 without shipping, but the shipping wasn't that expensive. It absolutely slaps. I'm also running Mac Os Ventura through OpenCore Launcher. And it hasn't skipped a beat. It has Metal acceleration, all apps work perfectly (for the most part, FaceTime can't see my camera...), and it's still very snappy (comparing to my work laptop, a 2020 Intel MacBook Pro 4TDB).

It’s like picking up a puppy on the side of the road, you don’t need it, but you’re not just gonna leave it there to die, so now you got a puppy

I bought one recently, it was made in 2017 i think and has the 8 core with 64gb and dual d700's. didn't really need it but like yourself just had an itch to scratch, i've actually put a 12 core in it just to have the maxed out spec and a new 1tb nvme. Love the machine and it's incredible how powerful it is for the age. they've aged line a fine wine and running sonoma with the adobe suite. final cut pro, ableton live etc it breezes through anything i throw at it. defo one of my fav "retro" tech pieces that is very much still usable today.

Just purchased one. Will be arriving tomorrow. 12 core, 16g ram, D500. I dont need it but couldnt believe the price. under $300. I still use my 5, 1 for music and photo's videos but felt the need to have one of these for my collection. I still have the first imac 17" intel machine. Still works. I will upgrade the ram and ssd. I like that i can run Monterey on it since my M1 macbook runs that. Plus the 12 core cpu should be fun. The Trashcan was the reason i built a hackintosh. Cant believe im getting one. But as i said its for my collection. " This mac pro was 6-10k when it came out fully loaded and i paid $300. " Gotta love it. Thanks for the post. Subbed.

I´m in the same camp, i sold my Mac Pro 2013 in 2022 (back than upgraded to 12 Core / 64 gigs as well) when moving to the M1 (now M2 Max) . But i still have the urge to buy one again.. and just if it sits on the Desk. Or maybe just play around with it from time to time.

Prices are dropping constantly so you should go for it!!! Especially if you wanna use it to create some music again!

I bought mine to produce music, and it's still doing its thing just fine. It has 64Gb, 1Tb and the 6 core CPU. It's sexy and does everything I need it to. It's my favourite computer. Ever.

I love mine, an eight core 3.0GHz with 32G. It was so cheap, it was literally an experiment to see if I could move all the way forward in MacOS. I did not realize such an advanced Mac existed until I finally bought it. Silent, small, lightweight and sort of beautiful. It is an ultra-capable Pro Tools computer, replacing my 3.46GHz Hex processor cheese grater. I have been able to use one fewer flight cases for my system due to this replacement. I will probably get a second for backup. So happy with it.

I purchased and upgraded a 2013 Mac Pro when you were running a series on the subjects. It was a gorgeous device and I had a lot of fun doing the upgrades. I sold it when the M chips were released and I saw the resale prices starting to tank, but I still kind of miss it.

Imagine how this design would work with Apple silicon.

No, you're not crazy! It's a fabulous design and conceptually the older brother of the G4 Cube (which I still have in the closet). Within the past year I got the Mac Pro 2013 8 core, 64 gig, D700 for my office and 6 core, 64 gig, D500 for my apt., both with 30" Apple Cinema Displays, after seeing your earlier reviews. Mind you, I'm an attorney and don't do any music or video work to any significant degree so the 2013 is great for text work, database and internet search etc. Keep up the interesting videos and reviews!

i really like this mac pro design... its just clean and heat dissipation just makes sense, Apple ARM chips will be a great fit in these..

The day I sold mine and the buyer drove away with it was one of the happiest of my life! Mine worked ok with TG Pro installed, but I found it stressful putting the Mac under load and waiting for the GPU’s to hang.. replaced it with a 2018 mini and eGPU and was much happier! Replaced that with a Mac Studio and I’m fine for a few years

Just got one from work today for free! We were using them as build machines for years (I'm a software developer at a mobile game company) and the decision was finally made to upgrade to new Mac Minis as this old 2nd gen Pro no longer supports any further macOS updates. They were literally going to just toss them in the bin because Apple offered $0 for trade-in lol. So happy to give one of these trash cans a loving home :) and it feels like a steal now that I've seen how much some refurbs are going for online!

A video on getting it to the latest unsupported version of Mac OS would be useful.

Oh wow, I'm happy to see this pop up again. You're a madlad! I bought and restored/upgraded one myself last year thanks to your videos. Good shit.
