YouTube Audio Quality - Sound Speeds

How good is the quality of YouTube's Audio Streams? Depending on the quality of the originally uploaded video and when the video was uploaded, YouTube compressed and converted both video and audio to allow for faster streaming to viewers. Those quality standards have changed throughout the years but now they have a system down that they seem to be pleased with. In a moment you'll know exactly how good the audio stream is that you're listening to. Sound Speeds!

This article included the audio quality charts I showed in this video.

The thing that I like about YouTube audio is the wide variety of postings. It’s great to find rare and unreleased songs on YouTube. For instance someone has a remastered 11 minute version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”, what a great version. The best thing is the fact that it’s a free download. The sound quality of the YouTube music selections are much better than Sirius music. I think that the Sirius music stream sounds like AM radio. Definitely no dynamic range, and low fidelity. YouTube music when properly uploaded comes through with full fidelity, crisp highs, and thumping lows. Thank you YouTube.

Oh dear.. This is revealing information that is very important to all YouTube Content Creators. This whole time I have been encoding and compressing at 128 kbps when I can push it just a bit more. My ears feel so deprived now! Thanks for this amazing researched fact finding mission! Everyone please hit that subscribe button!

Question: what bitrate should the sound in my videos be when I render them? currently experiencing a huge loss in quality between how the mp4 file sounds on my pc versus how it sounds once uploaded on youtube.

Where do you find the settings to change YouTube audio bitrate? When I’m live it says it’s lower than the recommended

I am an audiophile, and not a professional one but a amateur one. I went from 128Kbps MP3s to 320kbps MP3s and then I went to M4A (AAC & ALAC) to FLAC. and I found FLAC to be most satisfying but nearly undistinguished from 320kbps MP3 (I used Deezer as a source) and I used Spek software for comparison and also my listening abilities.
But recently, I came to know that if you want to convert a youtube video to audio then the best format for audio is OGG, for comparing them I used SPEK and I found that when you convert a youtube video song to MP3, frequencies above than 15k are cut off (not present) but when you convert to OGG, all frequencies upto 20k are present.
Also when I downloaded a youtube video and analysed it, I came to know that Youtube itself uses OGG (Iibopus) as a audio codec in its videos. this might be reason for good conversion.
Also I came to know that when you reduce a video quality of a video in youtube like from 1080p to 144p, the audio quality remains the same. as far as I know.

P.S. I know youtube is a bad source for music.

So basically, if I change the video quality from 1080p to 144p the audio will remain the same right?

Hi Buddy, I had a musical program live recording on youtube. However the sound did not come out well though the picture quality was ok. Is there a way to enhance the sound of the video now with any tool or app? Thanks very much.

With my latest song I uploaded it with a wav file, and it was fine before the upload, though after the upload it played back a lot slower than it originally did and the audio lost its energy totally. Any ideas?

What export settings do you recommend for best possible sound? Just audio and still image.
Thanks in advance

Very helpful and informative video, thank you for posting. Just an idea. Anyone concerned about YouTube audio quality playback can do what I call in Photoshop on the digital image side a "Subtraction test" where you digitally record about a minute or less of a high quality YouTube feed of a song you already have on CD (must be exact song), load the two files on their separate channel lined up to the millisecond (zoom in to do this) in Audacity and apply the effects filter "Invert" on one of them. If they are waveform identical, there will be silence playing both at the same time ("Solo" turned off on both). Any differences small or large will result in swirly sounds or something similar.

So if I’m given the option adjust the quality higher than 192kbps on a mp3 converter it really won’t change anything? Just wanted to get clarification

Hmm, I could always decrease Youtube playback speed to 75% tempo for learning bass guitar songs where the bass was clean sounding without changing pitch. Suddenly about 4 mo ago, the pitch is still ok, but the sound of the bass guitar played back slower is very annoyingly garbled. Any idea if YT changed something? And I'm talking about Mac OS, not an iPad or iPhone.
