The easiest way to describe ranpo is that he's a KID, and the president is like a parent figure to him. That's why ranpo doesn't do anything even though he know all the enemy's plan except if someone told or ask him to do so. That why he likes many things that children likes (sweets, comic, something looks cool or fun), also that explain his way of life and speaking (like saying a mean stuff so easily, sulking if he have to do something that he doesn't like, and any other childish action). The president is the person that ranpo respect the most in the agency, and as a parent figure, a praise from the president is a very big deal for ranpo, more than money or promotion (just like a 5 y/o kid want his father to praise him). I really like the layers behind his character

I absolutely love how people are all on about Chuuya but why nobody is talking about how Chuuya probably is the strongest character in bungou stray dogs & one of the most underrated but OP characters in anime

One thing that I think factors heavily into Kunikida's viewpoint and statements made in this episode (and the one prior) is that this all follows closely on from the Azure Messenger business.

Previous episode, Kunikida's a little colder toward Dazai being missing than might be expected, and doesn't go off on a 'drag that idiot out of the river and get his butt back to the office' mission. Dazai said some hard things at the end of the Azure Messenger case, so Kunikida is less intent on rounding him up. Now here's Atsushi wanting to save someone when he's barely found stablity himself. Kunikida's recently lost someone he made himself responsible for, the hacker son of the police officer who died in the original raid. He tried to save him, made himself responsible for his care for years, but then episode 1X07 happened.

Kunikida's words to Atsushi about Kyouka, the boat, being responsible for another person, they're all coming from behind that grim filter of his own recent experience of having tried to save someone and catastrophically failed. In one way, it's like Kunikida's trying to caution Atsushi off so he doesn't experience the same pain, but in another way, he's sunk into the bitterness that if his best effort came to tragedy, then it's a fool's game to even try in the first place.

I’ve said it on an earlier reaction video and I’ll say it again here. This is why I love Akutagawa. No grand announcements, no I’m here and I’m the bad guy, no talk, just an immediate attack with the aim to kill. More villains should act like this

Am I the only one who hasn't seen Chuuya before starting the series ? I had only seen Atsushi and Dazai and learned that the characters were inspired by literary figures and started watching because of that. But everyone else is like “Oh I started to watch because of Chuuya” 😁😁
