I'm glad people told me to watch Dead Apple before starting season 3 -- I feel the audience needed Dead Apple to get introduced to the concept of gods in the BSD world and the beings introduced.

While I LOVE the "date" (as Jacob rightfully labeled it) that Chuuya and Dazai go on, I live for the conversations with Mori and Dazai -- two figures that are larger than life and oh so similar to one another.

Someone should probably tell them that these are light novel adaptations (aka side stories). The anime seems to like to adapt (in my opinion, kinda poorly) a light novel per season, so nothing about this necessarily needs to connect back to the main plot.

If I were to describe Bungo Stray Dogs, I'd say it's a franchise of manga and light novels rather than a main manga with its spinoffs. The light novels carry much more importance than expected, usually to show the backstories and side stories of characters in the manga that won't directly contribute to the main story, as well as world building (I mean, the two Chuuya light novels actually reveal a ton about what abilities really are, which really seems to be main-conflict-worthy but I guess it's relegated to the light novels because the main story doesn't really concern itself with that, instead having the main conflict center around the book). Thus, it feels less like the standard linear storyline of most shounens and feels more like an anthology all set in one world (well, technically one multiverse, because of the Beast novel). That's why Chuuya feels so important even though in the manga, he's only made like, what, 4 real appearances so far?

Trying to figure out the plot of BSD is confusing even when you know about the non-linearity and the pieces to the puzzle. Honestly, BSD is primarily a character and themes centered series with the actual plot just being the backdrop for those things. BSD is best enjoyed just rolling with the punches and not questioning things.

This episode is probably the weirdest introduction to a season of BSD, yet. Like, S2's was weird, but people quickly got over it because that storyline was amazing. This one starts off talking about Gods, the prior boss resurrecting, and Chuyya pulling off his best "James Bond" impression and attacking a plane.

I wish they talked more about the episode itself rather than trying to tie the movie and fyodor to this flashback (fyi, it won't tie in here, it will tie in with the main storyline when we go back to the present time).. ever since the Dark Era mini arc last season i've been waiting for them to react and talk about Dazai's "do you really believe there is any value to the act of living?" line and his and Mori's conversation, their mirroring wickedness, since they reacted so strongly to dark depressed dazai last season, but i feel like chuuya being an enemy of the port mafia in the beginning and leading a group of orphaned kids, dazai being 14 years old when he witnessed mori sliced the previous boss' neck, mori still operating from his shady doctors office after he took over, the damn cat they always notice but didnt comment on this time, along with some other points they couldve talked about were a liiitle bit brushed off.. i wish they had commented more on the content they saw this episode rather than theorize about where it fits, i wouldve enjoyed this discussion more ..
still enjoyed the double black ship innuendos a lot, they have quite the chemistry huh.. cant wait for the next episode lol

The movie does have significance to the main plot, but more indirectly imo. It should be treated as a minor worldbuilding and character development arc, but not as "main plot" stuff. These were what I gathered from it personally:

1.) Dead Apple reinforces the importance of ability singularities in the plot. We already brushed upon it in Dark Era, but due to Oda and Gide's non-destructive ability nature, it doesn't hit as hard and that particular detail of it being a singularity doesn't really cling to our minds right away (I only really caught it after reading Storm Bringer, imagine that). Dead Apple is the one that drives how dangerous and powerful a singularity can be, and be the base of explanations for ability stats going absurd in the main plot.

2.) It touches upon the "true form of ability" being a dragon. ( *spoiler* something that is referenced in Storm Bringer as well).

3.) It hints on Dazai and Fyodor's relationship, and is mild foreshadowing on how dangerous the latter is. It also says a lot about how incomprehensible Dazai and Fyodor's minds are, and us peasants can't hope to even begin to understand wtf is happening :v

4.) It reveals that Atsushi's Tiger is actually capable of tearing through abilities itself. This has been hinted throughout the series, but Dead Apple is the most blatant proof (and *spoiler* S3 further solidifies it).

[Extra: 5.) Soukoku crumbs. Look, when I first watch the movie, I thought that the whole Skk interaction scenes were just fanservice inserted by the anime staff. Like, they know what sells to the fans, and will insert it as needed for business purposes. No matter how juicy it is and no matter how I personally love it, I *didn't* consider those as part of hard canon, because those aren't something that came purely from Asagiri-sensei. But then I read Storm Bringer, and I realized that, no, these idiots really *do* have an ambiguously intimate partnership. The way they interact post-corruption in Storm Bringer and in Dead Apple were practically carbon copies. So now I have confirmation that even if Asagiri-sensei doesn't really intend them to be together, those are still canon fanservice given directly by the author

Forget about trying to connect this to the movie. It only mentioned that these episodes take place a year earlier than the Dragon Head Conflict so you get an idea about when it takes place. They don't have anything to do with each other

The first few episodes are loosely connected to the conflict at the start of the movie. most of the movie connections apply to the main part of the season.

yeah it might feel clumsy but my favorite thing about bsd is that its all related somehow and you need to keep paying attention in order for it to click but when it does it makes u feel so smart

It does fit with the main season, the first part of this season is a light novel adaptation because the story of fifteen makes more sense after dead apple and establishes some things for season 3 proper.

They are trying so hard to connect the movie to season 3... the thing is the movie was added when the manga was way far from the events at the end of season 2, so of course it doesn't feel like it fits really well, but still, it's canon. I wish they read the comments of their videos, because basically everyone here it's trying to explain that.

I’ve just finished bsd s3 without watching the movie (unintentionally, I didn’t know the order of things to watch) and now I’m kinda glad I skipped it? Dunno, it would’ve pretty much messed everything up, for me at least. On my way to watch it now~
