You can use this as a method to enter any world, even invalid ones (i.e minus world), on real hardware. It abuses the fact that memory is not cleared when you swap games out. Just find a game that uses the same memory region as "last world before game over", such as Tennis (the memory region is the same as a step counter).

It's a well-known feature. It works by checking if the initial memory state satisfies some conditions that are unlikely to be satisfied when turning it on. It doesn't mean it saves memory when turned off
