Hey guys, in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to upgrade or downgrade your Unreal Engine projects. For example, taking a project from 5.0 to 5.1, or 5.1 to 5.0.

No, you can't downgrade a project as assets can't be downgrade.

Just change the version of the project is not enough. You just need to use a versioning system, like git and never update your engine too quickly (ie. NEVER update to the last version. Always wait hotfix and feedback from others).

do NOT do this, you lose EVERYTHING in your game. There is literally no reason at all to downgrade your project because its not possible to have the same project. You essentially start from scratch. Not sure why this wasn't pointed out in the video, especially since this video is made for beginners who would have no way of knowing that.

This way of downgrade will not work every time.
You can literally to kill your project and make it unloadable in any engine version. So make the backup in first place!

UE 5.1 not supports maps of UE 5.2. So you get error then try downgrate in this metod.

It's still not possible to downgrade a project. you are only setting which version of the ue editor is loaded when you double click the uprojekt file. as soon as you re-save a blueprint for example in 5.1 you can't open it anymore in 5.0. ​ The engine version is written to the binary uasset file on save. if your editor is >= this version it tries to load it - even if it may fail as there was a change eg in the bp nodes or the core api - but if the version is < it will not even try to do it! Kind of the same works with custom UE compiled builds. so not a luck with these guys also

All this does is change the file association. You still can't downgrade the actual assets in your project. The content browser will not display any files saved with a newer engine version.

This is perfectly viable to upgrade a project, though
