How we landed on a comet 300 million miles away

The Rosetta mission launched by the European Space Agency landed successfully on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12. The historic touchdown by the Philae lander was decades in the making.

the story is actually a lot more exciting than that!
When the lander went down to the comet, it accidentally bounced and due to the low gravity, it flew a few kilometers away from the comet. After a few hours of bouncing around, it was finally able to find a spot to rest at. The problem was, that this spot wasn't in the sun. The lander was supposed to work for at least a few days, maybe even weeks. But because of the lack of sunlight, the rover only had enough energy for 64 hours.

Interesting as usual, but can you please use metric units - along with the imperial ones, if you must? Every time you say "mile" the scientific community dies a little inside.

When you just notice it’s 2014 Video! who’s also here

Those videos are so awesome YOU HAVE TO USE THE METRIC SISTEM.

Funny that when something is about nasa the title is ‘nasa’s plane to save the earth’ but when its not nasa its ‘how WE landed on a comet’

I kinda hate the fact that when nasa does something, vox says nasa's this nasa's that. But when it is ESA, they say "we". But anyways good video, but can you put metric at least in () because i dont know imperial, and a lot also dont😂

From what I have heard and seen Philae, the lander, did not slow down before landing. Due to the low gravitational attraction of the comet the lander hardly accelerated from the point it was dropped (from an altitude of 22.5 km or 14 miles) and landed at about 1 m/s, which indeed about walking speed. None the less this is a milestone for science.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE PLUTO PICTURES THIS YEAR!!!

Dang, wouldn’t it be nice if the Earth poured a bunch of money into space exploration, so we act as one civilization in space rather than many on one planet.

Amazing video as usual, imagine if new materials or metals might be contained within!

there is very little in this video explaining exactly HOW we landed on a comet. should be renamed “We landed on a comet.”

I can always rely on Vox to teach me about something that's already so interesting, in an interesting way :)

I'm very happy that I found this channel.

Just imagine a satellite that have a size of an SUV actually lands on comet the size of mount fuji in a deep vast solar system

Some of the information about the Philae in the video has been left out. The Philae was designed to recharge its battery through solar panels but during its landing, it sadly bounced a few times when it landed and ended up on its side in a dark shadow zone of a crater. Because of that, the Philae was unable to recharge its batteries although it did collect data on its battery power alone before dying. Early results of this data has confirmed that the isotopic signature of the water on the comet is not similar to that of water on Earth.
