"These are our cathedrals" feels like a very good slap on the face given how utilitarian and corporate a lot of architecture (really, everything) feels nowadays. Easy to forget that humanity is still doing monolithic projects, we either just do not notice it because we're drowned by smaller things or we downplay it because we can't grasp the scale of it ourselves.

Love how each response acts as a stand in for humanity as a whole. Where people didn’t care, people believed it was wonderful and people believed it was a waste of money.

Those of us around when we landed on the moon recall the awe and wonder it inspired. And the developement of solid state circuits, data processing, miniaturization and data communications are why we have these phones, large screen TVs, laptop computers etc. are all developed from technology that emerged via the space program.
The reason we can communicate instantly from anywhere and navigate with GPS are all a result of satellites in space. This stuff all started with NASA. And NASA has a budget that is a tiny fraction of the total. And the future benefits will be things we cannot imagine. It will also inspire young people to become scientists and engineers. We need that too. The space program is a small expense with huge rewards.

If Neil Armstrong were more with it he would have said "That's one small step for a man and jack shit for Pablo Picasso"
