part 1 of how I self trained. This is just a breakdown of my experience and not a tutorial on how to. let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for part 2.

As usual it might sound cliche but getting training is the easiest route possible but if you want to go the self training way! its possible, just take your time and you will be just fine.

One thing self-training doesn’t offer is real-time feedback. Those first launches overload the brain. Having an instructor in your ear telling you what you should be doing ensures you don’t have brain lock and miss something very important or create a dangerous situation. Just about everything else can be learned online or from books. The big advantage of live-training is that voice in your ear saying “flare now” or “pull slight break to lift off the ground.”

Meticulous Research required to self learn, thanks for sharing.

It is a very frustrating process trying to kite when you are a total beginner and have no one to tell you what you are doing wrong or right. I tried self training before I could get into a course, and it was a disaster .
I ended up wrapping the wing around a power pole. By the grace of God I wasn't hurt, but I sure could have been.
The first day of actual training, my instructor showed me so much that I
Was doing wrong and things about knowing how much wind is too much. There's just tons of things to learn, I'm glad self training worked for you. Great video by the way.
I know what you mean about training being too far away, I am still trying to complete training and It is hard trying to get time off work, weather that's safe, and on and on.
Someday I will get there.

I self trained, To self train is to decide for yourself on how to train and use the information you gathered from your sources. You are in fact your own instructor. Every PPG pilot Self-Trains, some from the beginning.

Thank you for the video. I find myself in your situation. I just bought a newer blackhawk talon 190 and wing but I'm working 6 days a week so like you layed out the steps to lean I'll kite in many different situations. I live in the SF bay area so in the evenings mf my day off I can go to the beach or the mountains. I'll learn enough to be prepared so if I do get an instructor I'll be far ahead of the game. I really appreciate your videos.

Danielo ….Nice flight man.

That’s a pretty area along the 126 and good job being cool with the local PD. Self trained or taught formally, you’re now a skilled pilot. I’m a new pilot and have a perspective I think may be helpful. You clearly put in the time and effort, it sounds like you put in more time and effort than many.
You’re learning wasn’t unguided (you never said it was), with the advent of the internet, forums, b/vlogs and YouTube, we have access to all the most experienced and best minds in the sport. We can all now literally attend online classes from Harvard and Stanford, they clearly see the benefits of online learning. In traditional learning there is homework and that's an important aspect of any training...homework...work done independently and outside of school.

One can learn to play the drums, brush up on a martial art, and learn to build a redwood deck, using online learning.
It also takes balls to self train. You clearly put in the effort and practiced the skills that schools require prior to flying…and some. I’m not at all banging schools, that’s the route I chose and the route I would suggest for most .

After years of reading and some kiting with my used eBay wing I laid the groundwork. You’re smart enough and engaged enough to hunt down, kill and drag home the information you needed, then practiced and refined it. One would have to have the commitment, grey matter, balls, common sense, and (virtual) guidance from mentors as well.

I’ll be ready to fly with you in that area, or the Poppy Reserve by July 4th….which will give Independence Day an additional special meaning to me then. The AV is getting less green and I think I want a few miles of wind in my face for my first post-training flights. I’m thinking about a day or weekend at the Salton Sea or the beach somewhere.

Good video man…keep up the good work.

Great video.
Can't wait for the next one.
It will be grate if you can also share the research you have done, so it will be easier for us to find the relevant information.
Keep on the good work and be safe .
Thank you

Good for you pal, the problem with this community is the know it alls and virtue signallers, i am doing a lot of self training but thats only because there is no one close enough to me and i got into this in the winter so all the trainers have hibernated and until the better weather comes i will continue self training and then take up some training but hopefully there will be a multitude of trainers to choose from close by.
Keep it up because there will always be the self trainers so you might as well throw them some short cuts, but a lot in this sport would rather not tell you hoping that you will commit to a trainer, but unfortunately not everyone is in a position to get the training for one reason or another finances or distance which can be both a big obstacle for people

Very interesting point of view. I thought self trained is like the people around here who claim they know how to drive on snow (and the drunks who think they drive better plastered) but they go 65 on the highway and then skid on black ice, what happened? I guess they forgot about that. Now if you have a friend who you feel can teach you about the actual flying part that cant be googled, are you really self trained? Im wanting to get into this and asking questions about gear has net me some scorn as becoming 'that guy' that becomes the next stain on the ground (like the snow driving professional).

You really didn't self train. You used all the resources at your disposal. The internet is a beautiful thing. I got my private pilot's license about 4 years ago. Even with instruction, I needed the internet to help me make it through. Here's the good thing about "self-training, " you get to keep learning from experts. I am going to school in September. I hope to join you on a flight one day. I really like the poppies flight you did. I want to do Carrizo Plain. Carrizo didn't get the flowers that Palmdale area did. I think the desert got more rain this year.
