It takes practice to become a master of martial arts... but it also takes guidance! Here are two ways to guide your training towards mastery.

If you're lucky, you'll always have a great teacher by your side to guide your practice. But what if you don't? Who can you turn to for advice?

YOU. Listen, my friend—you are the greatest teacher you will ever know. No one knows you better than you. No one can make you work harder better than you.

So, to become a martial arts master—or a master of anything— you must first become a master teacher. Not to everyone—just to YOU. And here are two questions to help you do that.

Question #1: What am I working on?

Great students pay attention to what they’re doing, they’re honest about what’s working and what’s not, and they assign themselves themselves tasks—on top of whatever their teacher gives them—to make improvements. To be a master, you don’t just work out, you work on!

If you really have no idea what to work on, don’t worry—I’ve got another question for you…

Question #2: How can I do this better?

Master students know there is always something to improve. Master students know that advanced moves are just basic moves done better.

The Master Teacher treats each punch or kick as an experiment. Each experiment gives you the feedback you need to guide the next experiment. So, don’t train to maintain, train to gain!

That’s the bad news about becoming a master—the learning never ends. But that’s also the good news about becoming a master—the learning never ends!

So, before you pat yourself on the back for all your hard work, take a deeper look at what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. A master knows there is always something that can be improved. All you have to do is pay attention, be honest, and challenge yourself.

This video just opened my eyes, when Bruce Lee says "fear the man who practices one kick 10, 000 times", its not just muscle memory or conditioning, but because every kick is an improvement, if ever so slightly, over the previous kick. Thank you so much for this video!

One thing that I enjoy doing is seeing how every martial art I trained in before and currently training in now, interconnect with one another. To see how they interconnect really is an art in itself and you really start to see the meaning behind each technique.

Incredible, potently true, full of wisdom talk! This is the best vid yet! Absolutely fantastic! Truth be told you could practice one kata your entire life and still keep learning and improving it. Just like a Beethoven sonata, there’s a lifetime of practice you can put into it and still learn and improve. Thank you for this brilliant advice Sensei!
