Sighting explained, this is misleading headline ! What a waste of everyone's time. I happened to live in Phoenix at the time this happened, and witnessed it first hand. I can tell you the event convinced my wife and I that extraterrestrial life exists.

Nice report but fails to mention the massive number of witnesses along the route it took in two states, private pilot Kurt Russell reported seeing these lights to the control tower, the cover up from the military, etc.

The military went on high alert when PHX lights indecent happened. Then trying to disprove whole dam thing with flares. We went into attack mode, even before it went into AZ. They were tacking it for a while I heard.

Based on your title I was expecting proof of what the lights actually were, not a further "we don't know". Maybe you should consider changing the title to avoid confusion?

I live in Tucson and I can tell you that we were all out looking at the Hale Bopp Comet that was visible at that time. We were out in the desert looking at the sky, many people were. We saw ALL KINDS OF WEIRD PHENOMENA at that time. I saw rows of lights way in the distance out over the Barry Goldwater Test range near Tucson. They also said that it was flares. I think they know that we all have phones that record so they need to tell us something to explain what's going on. I just wish we had this happen now, at a time while everyone has phones to record.

Just watched how they trackwd the plane years ago that went down, by identifying radio wave disturbances that are recorded everywhere in a database! What were the radio disturbances at the time of Phoenix lights in the area?

My sister and I saw the same lights in 1988 it was cloudy that night and I saw a huge air craft through the clouds when I was driving it wasn't a plane! We followed it out to the Estrella mountains where we was it divided into colored lights and performed a light show! I will never forget that night:)

If the lights were also spotted over Mexico, how could they be military flares? You’re telling me the United States military is running training operations within the borders of another country? That doesn’t seem plausible.

Five A-10 Warthogs flying at ~ 40, 000 ft in a V at ~ 430 mph from Nellis to Davis-Monthan. Pilot training for Maryland National Guard. Flares on small parachutes were dropped later. These 'bad witnessing' cases should be ignored. Truly unexplainable cases like Levelland, TX in Nov 1957 should be examined much more, but apparently no one is smart enough to figure this out.

This is one of the best ufo events and it clearly was not flares. The only one I can think of on this scale was the one in Australia by that school.

Does the government have any files or records of these sightings? Has anyone tried to file FOIA request for records of this event? If government says it was flares, then no national security reason to withhold files and records of these sightings. A national security claim to not release records of event(s) in video would mean the government possesses the craft which it does not want to reveal for national security reasons

You ought to see what goes on over the middle of the Pacific Ocean at night around many of the little islands such as those in the Marshall Island chain. It's a real trip!

The other thing was that many people were looking up that evening to witness a comet. Then these things made their presence seen.

I saw a simillar viewing, as many people around me also did. It was around 1997-98, I was 4-5, at Nida, Lithuania, near baltic sea, but from the side of Kuršių Marios. My parents made a a film photo of the event. At moment of the event we were fishing at the pier, when suddenly all of the electricity in the city went off, there were about 20 bright yellow flare like objects in the sky at the height of clouds, that was arranged in linear fashion. I remember that warm summer evening with purple sky, one of the best memories in my life, all the people looked up and wondered what it was. To this day I wonder.
