How did DOCTOR STRANGE become so powerful against Thanos in Infinity War?

Dr strange has plenty of power and a large arsenal, it's also a weakness, none of his tools are the best at everything, but if he knows what to use in the right moment, he is almost unbeatable.

Not only this, but Ebony Maw is actually bananas strong at infinity war. He beats everyone. Which is odd considering he could've been an entirely separate villain.

Seeing as how clever Doctor Strange was in his first movie, you'd think he could figure out he was able to do this. Once in possession of the time stone, he could have scanned the future and learned to master every spell years ago.
