Wood is often a metaphor for wisdom in Irish lore, so perhaps knots in the wood implies knowledge (perhaps of the brehons) or wisdom (maybe of the druids) getting knotted up or twisted in some manner - a time when the intelligensia tied themselves up in pointless knots?

So the Fir Bolg were not deities then?
Or is it commonplace for Irish deities to die from plague and war etc?
