China's Marshall Plan for energy

The Marshall Plan was a transformative policy of US investment into postwar Europe, and cemented the United States as the leader of the Western world. The plan also deepened trade ties, banking relationships, and was a boon to America's industrial sector, opening up huge new markets.

China's Belt and Road Initiative is even more ambitious, in its investment scope and in how many countries are involved. In energy alone, China has installed more power projects since 2013 than the total electric generation of Australia.

China's central bank provides direct lending, which deepens China's banking relationships and promotes the internationalization of the renminbi. Chinese firms open new markets for industrial and consumer goods that did not exist. And the program strengthens China as a lender of first resort across emerging markets, and as a leader in the Global Majority countries.

China: We'd love to see poorer countries prosper so we can prosper as well.
U.S.: We don't want you to succeed because it would mean nothing left for us to exploit.

Your episodes are so condensed with facts, figures, charts and sources, that I frequently have to pause so I can l study them. Keep up the great work!

Love your posts! Probably the best out there on China (and I follow dozens). You have a superb staff to be able to research and present so much new and valuable information daily. I salute them and you. On the subject at hand--the foundation of modern economic activity is energy. Develop and capture this and you're on the ground floor for any nation. Dominating fossil fuels has been one of the primary drivers of US foreign policy since WW2. The Chinese approach is duel. Yes the Marshall plan provided the liquidity for Europeans to buy US goods and build their economies. But the Chinese couple this with the foundational element of economic development: energy. Your short breakdown is more profound than you may know. Thank you!

That's an obvious and excellent strategy. We lend you dollars we stacked in Hong Kong Central bank and you develop your green energy at low interest rates. We (china) take the central command of greening the world and eran recognition and respect while you achieve your energetic transition and independence from fossil fuels, saving money in the long run. Meanwhile we do not have to invest in US debt and assets. Instead we invest in the infrastructure we build for you guys! That a real WIN-WIN strategy! No weapon purchase needed, no back stabbing your regimes, You develop, you democratize naturally your own way, at your own pace! I see it this way too. In my view it is the best way to foreign policy as it gives a chance for peace to prevail.

The thing about the Marshall Plan and US dominance of the world manufacturing sector is that it was never sustainable. As the European countries and Japan recovered they were always going to force a more balanced distribution of world financial and economic power. The US dollar's prominence bought the US an artificially sustained role in the world but it also involved going massively into debt and drawing in those dollars from around the world. People like Trump want a return to a time that was dependent on unique circumstances.

Distressing but true. Thank you again for your meaty condensed offerings from the heartland of China. They have created the greatest supply chain for manufacturing the world has ever seen and based on your reporting they are dominating in almost every area of commerce. Their dominance is gaining pace as the US and Europe slide into "second world "societies.

China has a long-standing tradition that combines the business acumen of its people with the Confucian values of benevolence. The wealthier the southern countries become, the larger their markets will grow, and the more China can benefit. The most important thing is for everyone to prosper together.

As the chinese say 风水轮流转, good times come and go

The USA's problem is like the falls of empires of yore, aka trying to hold on to their "good times" which are less and less good for those at the bottom of society year after year since Ronald Regan.

I’m American, but I’ve lived and traveled around the world and seen how Americans are perceived.

It amazes me how many other Americans simply do not understand this simple point:

We were most respected, admired, AND STRONGEST when we engaged in so-called “soft power” projects like the “Marshall Plan”.

NOT when we had doofuses like W as President with his idiotic “war on terror” that achieved exactly nothing, while costing us $trillions and thousands of lives.

And definitely NOT when we are sanctioning, bombing, or tariffing much of the world like we are doing now, while threatening to invade Greenland and Mexico and take over Canada and Panama.

Why not just hang up a sign saying “China, Russia, here you go, you can have the whole world!”

But you can’t get this simple concept through the heads of the “rah rah ‘Merica!” neanderthals.

Thank you Kevin. I love that your meditative prayers at the end at now loud enough that we can hear them easily without starting our ears.
