A common question I get asked by those following my #TrainWithJim series is what’s the difference between a dumbbell squat and a dumbbell deadlift?? In this video, I explain.

If you start running with your right leg first, it's called sprinting.
If you start running with your left leg first, it's called spranting.
Two completely different exercises, I swear!

the squat, the back must not bend much at all. Let the legs do the lifting.

I'm still looking for an actual "squat." Your glutes never lowered one inch from where you started.

Great video, thank you. You helped me better understand that these are actually the exact same exercise :)

I was told by a PT i hired that if you do dumbbell squats, your meant to rest the dumbbells on ur shoulders, vertically and squat while your hands hold them as you do the motions. That way your immitating the principle of the squat of having the weight being carried on your shoulders and your legs are pushing your upper body plus weight directly upwards, your arms wont get fatigued in the process. Seen a few youtube fitness trainers do this method also.

That is NOT it.

Here is the correct one: For a dumbbell squat you tie 2 balloons one on each ear to squat. For dumbbell deadlift, you lift a dead racoon with the arms.

Dumbbell question, but isn't the squat supposed to be more legs and the deadlift more back?

In reality, the real difference is a deadlift means lifting the weight from off the ground from a dead stop position every rep. The dumbbell squat is stopping short of the floor and standing back up.

I'm not an expert but I've always thought, squats target your thighs and that you therefore lower your ass as much as possible keeping your upper body slightly tilted forward while standing up, wheras dead lifts target your lower back and that you therefore lower your ass as little as possible feeling the power coming from your lower back muscles and then continue to really strech your back until it is slightly arched....

No that's more of a deadlift still both are deadlifts if you want to squat with it either have the dumbells upwards on your shoulders while holding it and squatting or holding one dumbell foward like in a front squatand then squatting .both variations you did are more of a deadlift

Um, no. They're both deadlifts, at least the dumbbell versions

I put the dumbells in front of me for dumbell deadlifts . I recently started doing this and I felt it a lot more than deadlifts, since I do not really care about being strong as I can be now I think will be doing these a lot more now . Of course I want to be strong as possible but I am not going to kill myself like I used to .

Wtf you call that a squat? Didn’t even hit parallel, barely any quad activation.
