I'm quite sure in both these scenarios you're in an identical situation with your wrists pulling the poles down with you.

The point really is that holding them correctly (as demonstrated) allows a tighter/safer grip, pulling the handle tight against your palm and transferring strain away from your hands and onto your much stronger forearms.

I'm new to trekking poles, but just got some Fizan's. How long do you have yours adjusted? The conventional wisdom is when standing erect holding them, your elbows are at a 90 degree angle (forearm parallel to the ground). Is that what you do? Is longer worse?
