Dangerous jobs are a necessary part of our society, but the costs on workers can be very high. Take e-waste recyclers and sanitation workers who take great precautions to recycle your iPhone or dump your trash. Utility linemen and ranchers also make our list because of the high risk of being injured or dying on the job. We all expect police officers, firefighters, and roofers to be on our list, but what about slaughterhouse workers? Why didn't military combat make the list?

Air Traffic Controller. Mistakes allowed? Zero. ATC in the USAF have the highest rate of suicide and alcoholism of any Air Force job. No physical danger it's all mental.

I remember seeing a statistic some years ago about how underwater welding for oil rigs was one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the world. While the pay is great, its not a pleasant job. As well as having to deal with high voltages in water, welders have to also risk working around extreme water, air and oil pressures, wildlife attacks and welding around flammable substances. Oftentimes, only two welders are placed in a deep underwater room for 6 month shifts as they are the first line of defense and first responders to an oil spill. And supposedly, 1 out of 8 rotations, someone doesn't come home. Meaning you are sitting in a room with one other person for 6 months praying you never have to weld anything

Disaster assistance field workers. They go to areas that are inundated by every type of disaster you can imagine and a number you may not be able to. They test for pathogens and are regularly exposed to all manner of contaminations as well as working field hospitals filled with very scared panicked people who have lost everything and sometimes everyone they know, and are sometimes armed. They work the field labs, the temporary morgues all while working a 6 hours on 2 hours off schedule for months at a time.

Oilfield worker. My husband was killed on an oilrig. It took a second man losing his life in the same manner before changes were made.

My husband, John, was never worried about the rig itself. He told me that if he was going to die, it'd be in the helicopter ride to/from during landing/take off.... flying in weather they really shouldn't have, skidding across the platform a couple times, and mechanical problems.

Then there was the Deep Water Horizon explosion that killed some guys. 😔

You think coming across an abandoned slaughter house is bad? I had to stay at a b&b in Dayton PA on a road called slaughter house road! It was in the middle of nowhere with Amish buggies riding around and a place that looked like it was out of the wrong turn movies!

How about anyone who works in the medical field? Depending on where you work, you can exposed to bodily fluids, viruses, bacteria, and other dangerous chemicals/pathogens.
