Without wasps, fig trees wouldn’t be able to produce fruit.🐝
🌱
Figs are pollinated by female wasps, and they’re not actually fruits but inverted flowers - so wasps crawl inside, lay eggs and fertilize the flowers with pollen from other figs.
The wasp eggs hatch into larvae and they feed on the interior of the fig before pupating and exiting the fig as adult wasps.
I had no hope for my fig seeds but that’s clearly not the truth bc i kept these seeds for two years. and last week i opened my fig seeds to see some of the seeds sprouted. so i planted them in soil.
Now it is worth mentioning that not all figs contain wasp larvae, especially those sold in the grocery store because figs can also be grown without pollination by wasps so they don’t contain any eggs.
Even when a fig does contain wasp eggs or larvae, they are so small and microscopic that they are typically digested along with the rest of the fig's flesh when it is eaten. So, while the idea of wasps inside a fig might sound strange or unappetizing, it's actually a natural part of the fig's life cycle and doesn't usually have any impact on the fig's taste or nutritional value.
It’s also so cool that figs are one of the oldest fruits in the world, being grown for over 5000 years and used widely in ancient medicine for coughs and sore throats and of course, in cuisine. In ancient Greece, figs were considered a sacred fruit and were associated with fertility and love.
Go grow them!🌱

I'm just glad you clarified figs don't require wasps. TikTok misinformation is making entire groups of people avoid a perfectly delicious and safe food

Yeah, something to note:
Female figs are carnivorus flowers. The male figs are the ones that wasps want to have as they are a hollow nest for the wasp that has been rendered wingless. However, the flowers actually digest the wasps.

Even if the wasps pollinate the fig, you still don't eat the wasps. The flowers disolve them first before it's even ripe

Figs also produces a chemical called ficin that is able to disintegrate the wasps that sustains the flower.

Thank you I always wondered why my fig tree was surrounded by wasps each season. Like personally I hate wasps But I'm glad they were there for a good helpful reason.

I have a little fig tree. I got it two years ago, and it had only ever produced a very small, breba (spring) crop that would produce like... 2 or three figs and the squirrels would get them.
This year, I was thinking of getting rid of it because I have just a little deck garden and it takes up lots of space... So imagine my surprise when I found fifteen little figs growing. Should be able to pick them in a few more weeks. They are getting really big! Some are getting close to dropping!

Thank you for being the first person to mention that the figs we buy in the stores are not pollinated by wasps. So tired of seeing all these other plant influencers jump on the ARE YOU EATING WASPS??? train

Imagine trying to take a bite out of a fig to find a wasp inside.

Coming from another plant person this made me smile I know how rewarding it feels to finally get a difficult to grow seed to sprout 🙂

I’m trying gardenia without much luck if I ever get one of the seeds to sprout I’ll be ecstatic 😁😁😁

I was having trouble finding the seed pods so a friend gifted me some I’ve tried and tried without luck so far but I still have some left

Good luck on your fig tree, mines still small as has to stay in pot (joys of renting), but so far gives me 4-5 fruits a year.
