It never ceases to amaze me how many fucked up ways insects have to die.

Wasps crippling themselves and mating with their siblings are probably some of the less atrocious things they do

Out of all the ways to pollinate, It evolved THAT??

What this gentleman didn’t mention is that the fig enzyme completely digest the dead wasp parts. So the fig we eat is completely free from any wasps.

"Born in a fig, die in a fig" that's so metal.

Imagine being the one to discover this and have to write a report about it. People wouldve thought they were writing some kind of weird erotic fanfic

I knew they were syconium and that pollination involved a wasp. But you just filled the whole life cycle of this symbiotic relationship. Cheers 👍🏾

So do male fig wasps not exist outside of figs?! They're born in the fig, mate, and die burrowing out?

I don’t need to relearn this every time I FORGET.

So when we eat figs. What we were doing is consuming the remnant of a Wasp orgy

“You merely adopted the fig, I was born in it.”

A fig is not only a syconium, it's also like a BDSM dungeon

It is insane to me that of all the ways a plant could evolve, this is how a fig managed to.

Didn't know any of this, it was fascinating. Thanks.

Totally freaked out when I first heard this because I love eating figs. But I was very happy to learn that not all edible figs require wasps to be pollinated. Common figs are parthenocarpic (or gynodiecious) meaning they can bear fruit without pollination. Thank goodness 😂🥺

“ Once they’re born they mate with eachother” I had absolutely no words

This is the nice version. It's a freaking Shakespearean tragedy what happens inside a fig.
Incest, rape, heroic dying sacrifices, etc. 😮
