people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

"Actually care." I tell people this is the main difference all the time. This makes the biggest difference. Forget all the techniques and strategies... if you don't care then you will fail.

It is so important to care about your client. I remember many years ago in our fine furniture store in Calgary, Canada watching a previous client (couple) walk into the store, and I recognized them as I had sold them some furniture a few years prior to this . I for the life of me couldn't remember their name!
I thought, well they certainly will remember me so I went into our storage vault and looked through the old customer account cards for a few minutes and found theirs-and their name -and when I approached them and welcomed them by repeating their name, they were so ( flabbergasted) .. and probably a little impressed.. that they bought a ton of furniture from our store that day. That taught me a lesson I will never forget.

Pleased to have viewed this video; I do these things And this confirms I'm on the right track not to mention the 100& mystery shop report I received last August. I greet, engage in a caring way, question, tailor, then close the sale but also make them feel there is an aftercare service and that we value their custom EVERY time so that they are not just another statistic, but an actual human being.

0:30 1) actually care - ask questions, learn about them so u can make appropriate reccomendations
2:32 2) let them touch it / use it
4:10 3) reduce the risk - if u believe what u are selling them is the best thing for them, but they have objections of why the cant get it now and say they will come back. Reduce the risk, make it easier for them. Use passion to to help them see why they should get it now and not back.
5:18 bonus) if its not right for them, be willing to let them go

Thanks for this, Evan. I recently started a job in retail and it's harder than I expected. These tips are great!

Great advice all around. The first point is easy in most situations, but can be iffy in others, though. When my customers walk in the store I'm always sure to greet them and ask if there's anything in particular that they're looking for, but every now and again someone will walk in who is especially rude, having no regard at all for anybody in the store trying to help them. My assistant manager was even called a "moron" to her face simply because we did not have a specific shoe size available in the store. That's an extreme case, but when you get people like that walking in, it's obviously a lot harder to find the motivation to want to get to know them as a person.

Omg man u certainly right on track of caring for the customer, I got a interview tomorrow morning at macy's for a position at retail stock support and it borrows nearly all work duties of almost all the positions of the store. I definitely gonna use your advice man and I agree with nearly everything you stated in this vid.

Ahhh! Love this! Simple, straightforward, caring, authentic, amazing! This is exactly the type of treatment i'd like as a customer-so it makes PERFECT SENSE! I don't work retail but what do you do if you have pressure from management to meet sales goals? I used to work at a bank as a teller and we were all expected to "sell" the bank credit card but I had trouble doing this because I'm not a huge fan of credit cards. My supervisor told me to watch, "Maria" and how she sold the credit cards because if we didn't sell we weren't doing our job. Maria, used to beg people and many would cave in-that's not my style. I also used to work at an optical store where Becky and Tammy managed to sell people super expensive frames and made a great deal of commission. I would feel terrible selling people things that they don't really need or regret buying later. Maybe i'm just not cut out for these types of job or maybe i'm thinking about it all wrong and I need to do more research before I apply to jobs. Not sure.
