4 WORDS FOR AUDIO SUCCESS ✅

These 4 simple words have helped me massively in my journey to becoming a pro engineer 👇🏻

How Does It Sound?

I've never really been too worried about the Ins & Outs and all the technical details...

Yes, I've learned all those things along the way 🤷🏻‍♂️

But really when it comes down to it, what's most important is how it really sounds to me.

If it sounds good to me, then I know that it's gone out into the world sounding the best it can

You'll improve on the technical things the more practice you get

But this will ultimately help you put things out quicker and more frequently 👍🏻

Ahhh great advice. You'll get lost in the engineering process if you are very very picky about sound, and learning to let go and move onto the next project instead of lingering on one project for too long. You'll get better over time 💪

This is absolutely true. However, the one thing I will say is that it takes time and practice to know what actually DOES sound good... what CAN be improved upon?

Training your ears to hear layers, frequency masking, what compression IS/DOES.. is a learned skill.

And, I still use reference tracks every time I mix to this day (20 years in...)

In Cubase I have a hotkey assigned to a mouse button (I use a gaming mouse where every button is assigned to a common tasks and macros to speed up workflow)...

Right under my thumb, is my most commonly used button...

I have an A/B switcher from my track to similar genre reference track. Instant switch. When they're level-mached you can gain tons and tons of information about your track compared to a released master.

What I thought sounds good.. when comparing, turns out, could have more punch, it's too bright, layers stick out (snare too loud, kick too soft synths too wide or washed out with reverb... etc.)

Streaky, as always, is 100% correct. But it takes listening practice, perhaps even years of experimentation in sound design, EQ and arrangement to say instantly "this is wrong, could sound better".

Feedback is great too because when you work on a track for too long, you lose all perspective and just get "used to" the sound.

For me.. in the mornings when I first fire up my DAW. I get approximately 10 minutes of perfect listening ability when my ears are fresh and the track seems new. After that..

It's " regular breaks or lots of mistakes" !

Another Pro tip that really helped me...

Step out of your comfort zone constantly. Make and mix genres completely different to your own, try unusual mixes of sounds, invent genres and then work out the best way to mix them.. practice every day. Like a real instrument, such as guitar or piano, there are unique techniques to every style.

"a lot quicker" is the main point

If it sounds ok for engineers then it's presentable

More than this, how does it feels? It can sounds great, but the feeling is soul's ears

Hi Streaky, can i ask you how old are you?

The problem I have often is that on my super cool Adam midfield speakers it sounds amazing but as soon as a club PA gets on it somehow it sounds not the same, not as I wanted it to be. Often too much low end and too little fluffyness. Maybe because I compress to much. Can you make a video about this?
