I have been saved more than once by my guardian "angle".

I’ve just started working with wood. A giant limb broke of a tree in the wind and I cut of a log about 1.2meters long from that limb (it was somewhere around 25-30 cm in diameter at the thick end).

After I carried it home I left it for a month or so till I decided to split it in half, then split it again to get two planks. Then I bought my first plain (the only one in my local shop, it has I think a 45 deg angle) and started going at it. Both planks have a few spots where smaller branches were growing so the grain is pretty difficult.

Long story short, I will look into even steeper plain angles.
