Anne of Green Gables Series Overview and Rankings

Hi guys! Here are my thoughts on the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. I also rank the books from favorite to least favorite. Which book from the series is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

I read them all back in middle school after getting the set for Christmas. I finally read the first again last year (simply wonderful!), and I look forward to going through them again.

I hate sickly sweet sentiment, however, Anne is NOT that. Her love of the beauty of life is so GENUINE that you just fall in love with her life. If you need a bit of sunshine and happiness in your life, Anne can do that for you.

Windy Poplars is also my least favorite! I feel like I would have liked it 10x better if we’d seen Gilbert’s letters back to her!

I am reading the series this year with "Tia and all the books" group. You mentioned all Anne's mistakes. One of my favorite quotes from the first book

"Oh, I know I am a great trial to you, Marilla, I make so many mistakes, But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might."
I would highly recommend for you to read Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson. It is about Anne's parents, how they died and her life in foster homes and the orphanage.

I found out that "Windy Willows" and "Ingleside" were written many years later after "Rilla of Ingleside".
So the original publication order is "Island" followed by "House of Dreams." I'm currently reading the series for the first time and will attempt to stay with publication order for the first reading.

Hi! So I'm spending a windy/rainy day catching up on some older videos. :)
I have NOT read any of the Anne books, as far as I recall. I did watch the TV miniseries back when, but I don' think I ever read any of the books. I'd be curious to pick up the first book at some point to see what I think of it.

I never knew the premise of Anne of Green Gables. For some reason I always thought of it as something I wouldn’t like. I have no idea why? But your synopsis of the first book sounds extremely interesting to me. I’m not promising to read the entire series. I will take it one book at a time. Thank you so much!

Fun! 1 and 3 would be 1st and 2nd for me but then I think Rilla is my 3rd. The rest are a blur. Haha.

I have been wanting to do this!! You have inspired me!! I just read a beautiful book called Before Green Gables a prequel by Budge Wilson...it starts off with Anne parents what happened to them her life in the2 homes she lived in and how she ended up at the orphanage. It was up lifting inspiring and made me yell out in shock and cry years with her. Please look it up!

My favorites were Anne of the Island and Anne of Avonlea! My least favorites were probably Rainbow Valley and Anne of Ingleside. I honestly think that the last three books should have been their own spin off series, as they aren't really about Anne anymore.

hi i’m not sure if anyone will read this as this game out quite a while ago and i’m only just getting into anne of green gables (mainly because i’m absolutely in love with the show anne with an e and i had to read the books) so i’ve ordered the box set of what i thought was the whole series but it’s got the first three, the 5th (house of dreams) and that 7th (rainbow valley) and 8th (rilla of ingleside). I’m unsure why they missed out on the 4th and 6th books (windy willows and anne of ingleside), but i was considering purchasing them both separately.
Do you think it is worth it? Or do you think i’ll be okay with just reading the ones i have. I just want to make sure it’ll make sense when reading, and don’t want to miss out on any big moments from the series. :)

I missed the Avonlea characters in Anne's House of Dreams, especially in some scenes, as when SPOILER ALERT Marilla, Mrs. Lynde, and Davy and Dora visit Anne and Gilbert at Christmas, and when there's not anything about Diana's reaction to Anne and Gilbert's loss of Joy.
