I wanted to be a diplomat as well. I majored in international affairs. If I'd have known I could've been recruited as a spy, I'd have stuck with it.

I used to fly over GCHQ when I first started flying. When my instructor told me that GCHQ was most likely listening in on my communications with ATC, I started calling ATC with all kinds of daft requests. Until they eventually told me to bugger off.

I went to Trinity College Cambridge, known as a breeding ground for Soviet spies. In the 1970s, a friend who studied Chinese was approached by an MI6 recruiter. This was surprising as my friend was a convinced Communist. It was even more surprising when it later emerged that his father was a Soviet spy who had done a deal to avoid prosecution. Good to know that our security is in such safe hands!
