Do you struggle with the idea of faith? What is faith, saving faith, spurious faith, and what does it mean to believe in Jesus. Thanks for acknowledging that Martin Luther did well at first and then "bottomed out".
Shame that his stance changed with the "antinomian" controversy with John Agricola in 1537 .

The words notitia, assensus, and fiducia applied to faith originate with the Reformers of the 16th Century. Martin Luther argued that saving faith or true faith is a fides viva, a vital or living faith (Sproul, 2010, pg.47). This concept was further explicated by one of Luther's contemporaries, Philip Melanchthon. In 1521 Melanchthon first published his work, "Loci Communes Theologici, " which was the first systematic explanation of Protestant theology, and condensed the thoughts of the Reformers and defined notitia, assensus, and fiducia as the three essential elements of saving faith. It is he that codified what the scriptures had taught, and it was from Melanchthon's work that these words first appeared in the context of faith (Israel, 2007, pg.233).

I think to biblically understand the theme of 'saving faith', we should interpret all the 'believe' passages (i.e. John 3:16, Hebrews 11:1, Romans 10:1, Acts 8:37 etc) in light of all the 'repent' passages (i.e. Matthew 4:17, Luke 15:7, Acts 2:38, Romans 2:4 etc); and then conclude that to 'repent and believe' in the gospel of Jesus Christ = saving faith.

I use to listen to John MacArthur and I stopped and it didn't even have anything to do with this.

It was because an audience member asked him if there would be any animals in heaven or if we would see our pets in heaven.

And he dogmatically claimed "absolutely not." And then he went on to defend his belief that there will be no animals in heaven.

And I was like what 🤷...
There were animals in the garden of Eden why wouldn't there be animals in heaven?
Death was brought into the world through our sin and if we hadn't sinned even the animals wouldn't have had to experience death... I figure plants probably would die though, probably bugs as well.
But there certainly wouldn't be any African wild dogs tearing a gazelle apart. Animal suffering happens because we were put in charge of this world and we allowed evil into it, now it's under a curse and the curse brings death.

But the Bible clearly says that the lamb will lay down beside the wolf.
(Everyone's going to say it was lion it's not lion it's wolf")

The Bible also says "even the creation itself awaits its liberation from bondage and decay."

The Bible also says
"The righteous man regards the life of his animal but The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel."
Now if a righteous man regards the life of his animal how much more does a righteous God regard the life of his animals? As well as the life of his beloved children's beloved pets.

And Jesus said not one Sparrow falls to the ground apart from God.

Faith is ACTION. It's not internal but to act as if something is truth for you.

Our church teaches the “examining” believers for a while through their 9Marks Sunday School class books.

Side note: my husband and I are not in agreement with that teaching.

If God chose who would and wouldn't be saved, how would you feel about a God that chooses to save you but not your children/spouse/parents?

One way to know if your faith is real: profess Jesus Christ publicly. Let people know who you believe in.

Classical misguided Reformed teaching that 1) presumes (as in 'presumptuous sin') that the Reformation fixed everything that needed to be fix in Catholic error, and 2) defines "faith"as a once-off, Past Perfect tense thing, which it decidedly is not. And no, I am not Catholic. Not am I a Calvinist. And yes, the Greek "faith" incorporates the condition of faithfulness (Heb. 11:35-40) in the meaning of faith, which is left out, ignored, diminished. On top of that, "Christian" is portrayed as someone who once believed, or was once convinced. Faith is more than that. Criticism of others who are said to be 'slow to get to the point' in my view is hypocritacal from the evidence presented here. Which school did he attend and who gave him the title of "Pastor"?

You may be educated on theology, yet the Holy Spirit appears to be absent from your rhetoric
