Coming from the EU is not fleeing your country.

Im a born and bred londoner being persecuted along with my fellow BRITS by our government for speaking truth! Are we considered refugee's? If so can we claim those very lucrative benifits? please!

Asylum is a privilege not a right, we shouldn't give every single person asylum especially if we cannot manage to take them in, it's hard enough to deal with legal migration.

The fact that most travel though multiple safe countrys to come here is the kryptonite to this argument.

Now that Starmer has won and has an absolute majority, Sky News is encouraging even more "doctors and engineers" to come! This is clearly intentional. They know what they're doing!!

No country should be obliged to take in anyone

Asylum seeker has become synonymous with cynical opportunist. This was clearly not the intention of those who coined the term to define those escaping the horrors following the collapse of nations in post-war Europe.

NO WAY does a minimum wage worker take home £458 a week … they earn that before deductions ….my guess is well under £400 a week take home pay, just another Sky lie being fed to us

Mr Windsor & Sons has plenty of lands for them all to be housed upon. Let him accommodate them all. (pay the welfare bills for them too)

Crown Estate is 260, 000 acres... More than enough land to put some blocs of flats up to help assist with our beloved boat peoples coming from Dover. Mr Windsor should know all about sustainable living best practices too.

Having seen London in february 1998 and knowing that nowadays life for brittish people, working, is more challendging than in the 1998, etc, that fact also would "dwarf" my sinscere desire to come to the UK, knowing how much working people there, strugglle nowadays, more, than ever before

Much ignorance in the comments here I see, so let's provide some basic facts as a counterpoint to that then:

1. The right to asylum is an international recognized right, established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the UN in 1948.
Britain, along with basically every other nation in the world, has signed on to it since then.
Tory and right-wing press BS about leaving the European court has no impact what so ever on any of this - if Britain actually wanted to refuse people the right to even seek asylum it had to repudiate the UDHR.
Which would make it an international pariah with a reputation comparable with countries like North Korea, Iran, and South Sudan - who are amongst the few who have not signed on to the UDHR.

2. The UDHR states that EVERYONE has the RIGHT to seek asylum in ANY country of their choosing.
So no - it doesn't matter even one tiny little bit that people have traveled through other countries to reach Britain.
No one is forced to seek asylum in any country but everyone has the right to seek asylum in any country of their own choosing.

Britain DID have the option of sending asylum seekers back to any country it previously had sought asylum in within the EU - that is a mechanism the EU has.
But since Britain left the EU it has lost that possibility.

So blame Farage and Boris for Britain now NOT having the option of sending those asylum seekers back.

3. Note that what we're talking here is the right to SEEK asylum.
People on the far-right usually pretend this is the same as a right to stay. IT IS NOT.
Many asylum seekers are, when their cases have been investigated, in fact denied the right to remain in the country they have sought asylum in.
There are repatriation flights with asylum seekers going from rich countries in the western world back to virtually every other country in the world on a daily basis.

4. NO rich western country in fact has an "open door" or "let's everyone in" policy - that's just far-right nonsense.
What the far-right instead tries to do is conflate the right to seek asylum with a right to stay - but those a two completely separate things.

5. In the case of the UK the Tories have utterly destroyed almost all aspects of the British state during their 14 years in power.
By underfunding every part of the state almost nothing works any more and the asylum system is no different.
Instead of investigating asylum seekers claims with weeks or a few months to make the determination if they should be given the right to stay or not, asylum seekers are now spending YEARS in hotels, waiting for these decisions.
During this time they are FORBIDDEN to work.
None of this is the fault of the asylum seekers themselves - it's the fault of the previous Tory government.

Just some basic facts there, to balance the ignorance in this comment section.

Also if asylum is a human right, so is common sense because our Island has done enough for them before, let them try elsewhere.
