China’s Nascent Aircraft Carrier Fleet
By Eric Wertheim
April 2020 Proceedings Vol. 146/4/1,406

China has been rapidly expanding its aircraft carrier capabilities in recent years. The country currently operates two aircraft carriers: the Liaoning, a refurbished Soviet-era vessel, and the domestically built Type 001A carrier. Additionally, China is developing more advanced carriers, such as the Type 002 and Type 003, which will feature enhanced capabilities and larger air wings. These developments reflect China's growing naval power and its ambitions to become a major maritime force.

This is a pretty comprehensive report and one of the best youtube videos I've seen so far regarding China's aircraft carrier fleet. Have a like.

Making a functional Aircraft Carrier is an indigenous achievement in itself. Alongwith shorebased DF21 and digitised Space and Surface based ISR, one supposes that China has come of age and only has to synergise her " doctrine, policy and procedures". She has functional air and water UGVs both for surveillance and lethality under productional matrices of self sufficiency too. Her EW has become professional.

in 2009 Post WW2 Japan was the first to launch a carrier in East Asia.
China responded to this escalation with their own carrier.
Repurposing an old rusted soviet museum piece. China bought another carrier the Minsk its still a museum piece.

In light of China's navy making port-of-call visits to Cuba we should take claims of intent to build at least one CVN in earnest.
Unnoted here, perhaps elsewhere, are the horrific attrition rates suffered in training up Chinese carrier pilots. The stats about total pilot training deaths are too high to be believed, though it is certain that there have been fatal accidents to pilots. Also of note is the fact China already operates around a half dozen LPH in various configurations. Industrial "choke" points for the PLAN are 1) jet engines for aircraft 2) steam or electric catapaults. We can anticipate persistent and repeated Chinese efforts at stealing these two key technologies.

It is true that that our Chinese friends show great potential, after all, the Japanese had a very effective carrier fleet in WW2 and the Chinese are pretty competitive with Japan these days. Now, getting down to business, I am impressed that China has finally dropped the Russian carrier design and opted to follow the best and begin copying the USA designs of the Nimitz and Gerald R Ford Classes. The internet comes in very handy when searching for those modern design options. I'm guessing they also watched Top Gun a lot and thought, we should get one or two of those. It is worth remembering that the US Navy has been operating aircraft carriers for over 100 years, throughout WW2, the Korean & Vietnam wars and a host of actions in the Middle East. I hope our Chinese brothers don't take too much offense, but they have a lot of catching up to do. It would be wise for the USA to pay close attention to their carrier development, it would be a shame to get caught flat-footed as we did in Pearl in 41.

Is it true that it takes 48 hrs to start one of these things because of the ineffective turbine operation?
