I’m over 45, but not an executive. There is an active campaign to keep some of us small because things would collapse if not for the worker bees. People are not promoted for skill, only for perceived “fit” and mostly to keep executives feeling comfortable and unchallenged.

Definitely need to remind myself of this. Lots of "failing up" in corporate America!

That's the number one thing you learn as you get older. There are no adults here. 😂 I've had so many incompetent managers and coworkers.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY needed to hear this message today. Thank you for sharing. I don’t feel so stuck and alone anymore. I’ve been successful in my role despite the widespread incompetence and immaturity.

I work for two different companies. The owners both ask me daily how to export PDFs and how to edit word docs etc….
It’s insane how little these boomers and gen x business owners know about tech and they refuse to learn… yet continue to make big money. Meanwhile I have all the skills they do PLUS I can obviously do more and I get paid by the hour. It’s so stupid and incredibly unfair.

This is so true. Just look at the questions that Senators asked Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai. The questions were so out of touch with the times that it was actually funny. Someone commented: Pichai is playing the highest level of “you laugh, you loose” 😂 It’s actually scary that these people run the country and make policies.

Thank you for the reminder! I still have things I'd like to improve on but I refuse to let nasty people try to set my value. I'm proud of what I've accomplished; the success I have is not only because of me but because I have a team that supports and strengthens each other.

I've mostly worked for Fortune 500 companies and government. She's telling the truth and recognizing this helped me overcome imposter syndrome.

If people were capable of reading their emails and understanding due dates, my job would 100% not exist. These people make at least 3x more than I do, but I have to act like their mother, nagging them to do the job they’re actually paid to do 😂

We live in an era of capitalist nepotism, which is basically modern feudalism with extra steps.

Most people in high up positions are there because of their postal code at birth, their family name, connections and simply put, tons of luck and an environment where those few who are up there because of their merits, had a chance to develop those merits and skills thanks to being born in certain postal code over another, thus having their hard work being actually rewarded, which helps them to justify their survivor's biases.

They, are the real impostors, and the owner is rich because of the wealth they parasite from their employees' labor, never forget it.

my mom is one of those people. her constant complaining about "incompetent" people my age made me realize just how bad she is at her job. makes me feel more comfortable in my position tbh

I needed to hear this ♥️😂 I just turned 30, I’ve been working as an independent architect for 3 years. I am now collaborating with a corporate construction company and having weekly meetings with 20 people 40 and + age - the level of incompetency is insane.

They hired you. If anything it's on them. Or, consider you're an amazing sales person

Unfortunately, due to experience, I agree with you.

Running into this at my workplace. The "omg my manager is actually an idiot who lazes most of their shift" is infuriating

Thank you for this... Definitely need external reminders of this from time to time (even though I often see this exact incompetence on my workplaces)

Being in my early 40s I feel like this is 'bi-modal', yes the olde managers are hopeless but also so many of the entry level people in my place of work come from hyper privileged backgrounds and got their jobs because mommy and daddy paid not just for university but also several unpaid internships. They act like they should be running the place when they have never really had to work for anything.

especially if you're young...don't consider yourself an imposter. but do consider yourself a beginner. I agree that 50% of executives are truly bad at their jobs but it's not because they don't have awesome computer skills. being able to kill a spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation or plug something into Chat doesn't make someone a genius btw
