Also don’t need a cap on your head whilst indoors !

We call them fair weather cyclists around here. Once you get a clogged valve, you never skip them again.

I was always told to use a valve cap, because it helps keep dirt/dust from getting in and blocking the valve.

"they add weight" right... about as much as I sweat in thirty seconds.

They won't slow you down, but add a little bit of protection for your valve.

I use valve caps. One doubles as a valve core tool, and the other doubles as a spoke wrench

Road: no
Gravel & mountain : yes (for dirt)

Keeps debris out of the stem tip, protects the stem tip threads, and help keep the valve from dropping back into the rim during tube replacement.

I know this is a thing with recreational riders, but when the rims of my commuter bike are covered with crud (and if I did clean them, most of the year they will be covered with crud in less than a week, I wouldn't want that crud getting into the fiddly valve mechanism. The next time I aired-up, the sand would get blown into where it would destroy the seal on the valve, and now I have a tire that won't hold air.

Valve caps protect the inner tube from getting damaged by the valve itself while being rolled up in the saddle bag. They are not needed once the tube is installed

Dust, dirt, mud... I guess in the context of road cycling it doesn't matter as much but it literally has no effect on performance either way

I don't want mud getting into valves then being forced into the tube next time they are inflated. How many minutes are saved on a ride by ditching a couple of grammes ov weight

When driving in dirty/gravel roads I noticed that without cap the valve head gets occasionally bend from small impacts.

The caps keep water out that will freeze, expand, and release the air pressure on woods and possibly some schrader style valves.

I like my Muc Off red valves, the matching valve caps are the cherry on the cake and look nivce with my red stem bolts. I wouldn’t go anywhere without them. Oh, and one of them doubles up as a valve core removal tool. Sweet.

Valve caps during salty winter in Norway! Then they are functional.

I do have one valve cap and the cap I use is the one you can air up at any air pump. Not all air stations have the ability to pump up the thin valve stems.

I like it for style. I use upgraded aluminum caps, no way I'll keep the ugly default black plastic caps just to save 5$. Some cap even double up as valve core remover for Presta.

Utter ramall, caps have a function, " unlike experienced cyclists" all weather and off road cyclists know caps protect the valve from damage from road debris, dirt, water, stone strikes, and prevent damage when rolled up. And they weigh nowt.

I would disagree. I've seen people have their valve stems broken by flying rocks, and their ride ended when their tire deflated.

Not sure having the valve cap on would have protected a valve stem, but I keep mine on because of that.

Off. Rotational weight. My road bike has tubed tires and both valve ring and cap are off.
