Following a logical sequence when troubleshooting is always a promising strategy. I might have overheard ist, but my favorite first step on troubleshooting a network connection is opening a terminal and pinging a server.

And, there you nailed it: I even woke up in the middle of the night when the solution came to my mind. To avoid forgetting when going back to sleep, I rather fix the issue no matter what time. 🙂
