The protests ignited by the because of 22 year old Mahsa Amini who died while in Iran's morality police custody has seen thousands in the streets of Tehran, the country's capital, and other cities around the country like no other this regime has seen. And the protests spilled out across the globe with many more marching on Iranian embassies all over the world.
As with other protests by nationals against their own country, they look for a symbol, emblem, to rally round as they feel that their national flag represents the current leaders, the very people they are protesting against. In this case, the old Lion and Sun Iranian flag has started to appear as a symbol of solidarity with each other, as protests grow for Iranian women's rights.

🏆 My Goal 🏆

My goal is to share the stories of flags on YouTube to as many of you as possible. To bring them to life through quick and simple facts, history, meaning in as entertaining a way I can.

I want to cater to those of you who might want to know a little more about a flag linked to a holiday to a vexillologist who knows their shi.... stuff. I want to help YOU, whoever you are out there reading this, increase your knowledge and expand your horizons in the world of flags.

But what is this flag?
This is the Three-coloured flag with the Lion and Sun and was first used in Iran in 1907. The green is for growth and nature, white for freedom and red for bravery, but it's the emblem in the middle that differentiates this flag to the current one. The lion and sun symbol was mostly based on astronomical and astrological configurations, the sign of the sun in the house of Leo, which dates back to the Babylonian traditions.
During the Safavid and first Qajar King, it became more associated with Shia Islam. For a while the lion stood for the state, or government and the sun represented Islam.
However, after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, this flag was replaced by the current on 29th July 1980, which is why this flag is now used as a sign against the today's regime.

in addition the lion and sun emblem has a romantic story which you didn't mention in your video,
about 800 years ago a muslim saljuk ruler called kaykhusraw II felt in love with a Christian georgian girl,
kaykhusraw ordered to depict this girl face on the seljuk government coins,
but since this georgian girl was Christian it was totally unacceptable for Muslim people,
finally the depictors decided to depict this girl face as a sun and kaykhusraw face as a lion by doing so, they did the ruler orders and satisfied the muslim people somehow...
