William Dunn (US fighter ace who flew Spitfires, P-51s, Hurricanes, and P-47s): "Now, if I had to make the choice of one fighter aircraft above all the others - one that I'd rather have tied to the seat of my pants in any tactical situation - it would be, without any doubt, the world's greatest propeller driven flying machine - the magnificent and immortal Spitfire."

The sound from both planes sends shivers down my spine. What an incredible engine the Merlin was.

was at east kirkby a few years ago when they had a mustang fly in. my grandma was with us who just sat there and said, "thats a merlin in that trust me i never forget that sound" she grew up round lincoln and was 14 at the start of the war so got used to the sound of the mighty merlin. she has always said its one of those sounds you never forget. which i know is true.

The Spitfire is a symbol of British defiance and epitomises the height of British glory, strength and courage.
While the Mustang's duty was to escort bombers and help win the war, the Spit was charged with destroying bombers and saving the war. In my opinion it looks and sounds better than the P-51 and literally gives me shivers whenever I look at it from any angle. Just picture hundreds of them fighting to defend their home country. And I'm sorry but even the name Spitfire is just so damn awesome and itself has become a legend.
True greatness.

Both engines make the same sound from the exhaust. The whistles comes from air intakes and aerodynamic differences between the two war winning fighters.

Why the fuck is everyone arguing over the Spitfire and Mustang?
BOTH planes were great but they played completely different rolls.
While the Spitfire was a dog fighting machine of par excellence, the Mustang was very good at doing different jobs. Probably the best propeller driven ALL-ROUNDER. From escort duty of bombers over Berlin to close support with the strafing (Versions of the P51 also had carried rockets too!) and bombing of enemy ground units.
I love BOTH planes. BOTH planes helped the Allies win WW2. When I see either flying, my heart skips a beat.
And as a side note, Mustangs flew for the RAF in WW2. It was also the Brits who termed the name "Mustang" to the P51 too. But it was when the Mustang's were given the Merlin engine that this iconic plane it really took off.
But these planes were nothing without the great pilots who flew them and gave their lives for us.

My father flew p51d and they were excellent in maneuverability as a 21 year old facing death every mission they did alot of stupid things to blow off pressure. He told me how they would challenge each other on the way back to England. A favorite past time was to fly under bridges, it was like russian roulette because if there was cable underneath that was it for you. He often did dead stick landings but would fire up the engine just before they touched down to get the nose up. Unfortunately after the war he lost his license doing this. He was putting a friends new Cessna through it's paces and started to do his normal dead stick landing but he said the damn thing wouldn't stop gliding. He overshot the runway restarted the engine but there was not enough power to get it back up quick enough so he augered it into the ground. The owner of the plane was a retired full bird colonel and that was the last time my father ever flew.

This Spitfire is known as " The Spirit of Kent Spitfire " and I think its a V12 Merlin engine powering it.

Whistle sound in the Spitfire is the supercharger but in the Mustang it's the gun ports.

If it wasn't for the Hurricane this discussion wouldn't be happening.
