R2D2 was having a fantastic time in the cockpit

That is the sexiest sound I've ever heard that didn't emanate from a woman.

Fuck it, nevermind. That's the sexiest sound I've ever heard.

It's the gun ports that causes the whistling, the gun ports were temporarily taped up on Big Beautiful Doll and the whistling stopped. It's not the supercharger, it's the gun ports.

Before R2D2 flew with the X-Wing, he was known to tag along in P-51s

What I'd give to fly a Mustang just once.

I recently read from a P-51 owner/pilot that the "whine" is heard only one P-51's with the faux gun barrels projecting from the wings - and then it is only heard when pulling 2.5 g's or more. But yes H. Johnson, it is very reminiscent of the sound of R2D2 made as he was getting spit out of the water creature's mouth in "The Empire Strikes Back".

Probably not the first to say this, but that sounds like R2D2 screaming.

Wow so many different comments about the source of the whistle sound, we need the MythBusters TV team to solve this mystery once and for all.

It’s the recessed inner gun barrel that makes that whistling sound when the wind hits it just right. No other sound like it!

The Plane doesnt make the sound, Its the wind whistling at that beauty as it flys by

It’s finally over. All those armchair pilots telling anyone that’ll listen that ‘it’s the supercharger’ for all those years and finally we all now know it’s the .50 cal mg ports as the wind rushes through them at the right angle/g. Still a great sound 👍

@bobsurgranny This was a case of standing exactly in the right spot and the right moment, normally the whistle is subtle, but this was ear splittingly loud, in a enjoyable kinda way.

The F4U Corsair made a whistling sound also and was referred to by the Japanese as "Whistling Death". So, my guess would be the supercharger or the air passing through the cooling radiator ducts of the radial engine.

Guys it's not the supercharger or the rad, it's the gun port. Have a look at the Scandinavian p51, no gun port and no scream, the above P51 had gun ports and screams. Also only screams pulling 2+ G's.
Watch this P51, 5hARupaw1cQ, how is it that it has a rad and supercharger yet does not make the screaming sound. Possibly because it has been modified with no gun ports. ding ding ding, I think we have a winner.
Here's another telling video. rRB8fLF6GSQ  2 p51's in the same video, the first without gunports and the second with, the answers are all right there in front of you. :)

The whistle is NOT the gun barrels nor is it the supercharger. It's the sound of the air going through the intake under the belly of the plane. Notice how you never heard this sound on almost any other WWII aircraft, and the Mustang has a belly air intake. Also take note that one can only hear it when the belly/intake of the plane can be seen by the viewer. It was one of the first mass-produced planes to incorporate the Meredith effect into its design and it became known worldwide for this sound.

The whistle comes from the gun holes in the wing

Hello all, so a quick explanation of this sound:
The inboard 50 cal mount is recessed into the wing making like a beer bottle neck opening. When the p51 is pulling G or at a point of stalling (both high angles of attack) the air forced over the opening causes a whistle, a very unique sound to this aeroplane. If you watch p51's display that don't have gun ports this sound does not occur, ruling out that its the supercharger or air intake that causes this sound.

Hope this helps :)
