I have always asked myself this question. What is the orbit of the moon was to be changed and start spiraling inwards towards the earth ? Would the rotation of the earth suddenly stop and force all the waters of the oceans, which would continue moving at the same velocity, envelope the tiny land mass we call continents ? would that mean only mammals that would survive are dolphins and whales ? Would the life thereafter be only creatures that currently survive in water ? I did not imagine the moon would disintegrate before hitting earth though
