How to Play Simplified Dungeons and Dragon!

I've started playing with my son, and we're just having the time of our lives. We're spending 3-4-5 hours just diving into this world. We're playing Phandelver as well with one of his class mates, but just last Saturday I tried a homebrew 1-1 one shot. I knew what he liked about the game and what he didn't like. So no dungeon crawls or eerie encounters with ghouls and ghosts. I made it a bodyguard mission where they (him and a sidekick character from the essential kit) had to escort a wounded centaur, Falun'Kan who had to bring Gyldibrant's Golden Berries to Phar'Norst forrest to the east, and once they are planted the magical powers will root out the Blight infestation that has taken root.
Simple story. They go from A to B to C and have two encounters along the way.
It was SO much fun.

Our kids (oldest 9) just started bringing up an interest in playing. I, fatherJ, used to play lots of different RPGs, so really appreciate you sharing this video on how to play a simplified version. Thank you very much. :)

Thank you! My kiddos 7 and 9 want to play D&D and I am so confused since I have never played. This makes it so easy to get them started.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have never played the game nor has my kids. We all wanted to try it so I have to learn the game and how to DM. But this video made it super simple to start out. I was getting way to stressed and overwhelmed because of so many rules. Thank you!

D and D is a WONDERFUL game! Friends and I started a group when the game first came out. I even met Gary Gygax when I was in college, where I played in another group every Saturday night. I wish I still had all my FIRST edition manuals, but I sold them when I moved to Germany. I MISS playing so much. As a matter of fact, my name, Lady Dragonsblood was the name of my Paladin. Presley you are really going to enjoy playing.... the better your imagination, the better the game.... and you have a wonderful imagination. I wish I could play with you! Enjoy the game!

I started playing D&D at 11, my first game I was the DM and ran mine of phandelver. I'm now 11 and have only played 3 games where I am not the DM, 1 of which my friend I introduced ran!

Just spotted this! Can't wait to see the whole thing! I learned how to play D&D from the original pamphlets and have a first editions of the Players Handbook and DM Guide.

So awesome. I just mistakenly got this as a bundle (I thought it was something to do with Magic) and kinda wanted the challenge. So happy to see you guys play out the set I just got and want to try out with my kids (I’ve only played a couple times myself long ago).

Thanks so much for this. I have just been playing again with my teenage boy but was wondering how to do an easier and quicker intro for some primary kids I teach. Thank you.

Actually a DC 10 is a success not a failure on a 10

Lol "if you want to make that decision, i won't stop you.... But you should probably help me" hahaha i don't know why that was so hilarious. Great job with this mini tutorial I've got a daughter now and im sure the day will come when she asks to play some d&d and its been too long since I've played.

This is really helpful for me as I am going to try out a small adventure with the kids at Vacation Care! It's good to see how kids who haven't played before react to the rules etc. Thank you!

I was planning, when my kids get old enough (or with the nieces and nephews), starting with the original basic D&D rules (i.e. the red box set from the 80's you can probably find the pdf online for it). Just to get them the flavor of playing a tabletop RPG and a sense of D&D with the simpliest of rule sets. When they get older/more familiar or better with it, move then into the current rules set (or my preference for selfish reasons of nostalgia progress them through the colored box sets then into 1 edition AD&D campaign :) )

Who else is here because playing with your kids (or younger siblings in my case) is a great way to get through this lockdown?

Great video for beginners who:
1) Want to get started but are overwhelmed with keeping track of all these rules
2) Not knowing how to properly apply all these modifiers
3) Don't personally know experienced D&D players who can teach them.
4) Need to see how all these modifiers work together in each stage of the game. 😊👍

Thanks so much! Just bought the starter set and haven't played much so keeping all the rules going with my kids seemed kinda hard. This makes it way easier to start.

My little brother is the DM for my dnd group, and I've never seen someone so frustrated as one of our first campaigns when he had us go against a mob of wolves being controlled by something (can't remember what it was called now) and I refused to actually kill the wolves since they were just doing what they were commanded to do. What was supposed to be a five minute encounter that would segue into the first actual mini boss turned into an hour of me leading my group to strategize how to use a combination of traps, holds, and animal handling to incapacitate but not kill the wolves.

(My brother has been extremely careful since then about what kind of animal foes he puts in the game... but then realized he could use it against me, too. In our latest campaign we're picking quests from a bulletin board outside of a town and the two he gave us to pick between were "Something stole my dog, help me find him before he dies in the woods." and "Here's a picture of a really cute tiny pony that's going to be fed to a baby black dragon unless you uncover the dragon smuggling ring.")
