Blinking Cursor Black Screen Windows 10 - EASY FIX - Samsung RV520

A single blinking cursor on a black screen of a laptop or desktop computer with Windows 10 is usually caused by a hard drive issue in most cases, even in other versions of Windows. This troubleshoot and fix is rather simple, and if you know how to use as screwdriver, how to order a replacement drive, and you can follow a couple of tutorials on how to create a USB installation drive, then you can easily repair your own laptop or desktop computer, let’s tech it out.

This client’s laptop, a Samsung RV520, has Windows 10 Pro and is no longer booting up. When turning on the laptop you get an initial splash screen showing the Samsung logo and then the single blinking cursor.

To troubleshoot this, the best tool to use in my opinion is a live USB Linux Installation drive. Today we are using Linux mint 19.2 64 bit, feel free to use any distro, even a 32 bit if unsure, and since this is an older computer, I am using an MBR version rather than a GPT version, so bear that in mind when creating a Linux installation drive as in this tutorial, link above and below.

Turn off your laptop, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge any static electricity, then plug in your charging adaptor. Next plug in the Linux USB drive, reboot, and press F2 (or whatever key you need to press for your computer), to enter BIOS. Once you are there go into the boot order menu, check if your existing drive is being detected, and then change the boot order to enable the Linux USB drive as the first boot drive, press F10 to save and exit, and reboot.

Once you are logged into Linux, press start menu and type in disks, select and press enter. In our case we can see the 160GB Hard Disk present, with 4 partitions, but they are not currently mounted. The biggest partition is not currently being recognised, coming up as unknown, which tells me there could be hardware failure issues.

I completely shutdown the rig, unplugged everything from the rig that used a USB port, and turned it on. This was able to get me passed the black screen for some reason.

I had an issue where I didn't get a splash screen, it booted up only to the dash on screen, but it wasn't blinking.
I got around this by flipping the switch next to the power cable on the back, then waiting a bit to turn it on again and it worked. No idea why.

Yo ive figured it out for real, when you boot up the computer spam the keyboard until the keyboard error pops up instead of the cursor and black screen, from there change any setting that wont impact the computer, save it and when it asks which device to boot up go down to hard drive

It's not a failing " hard drive" my 970 evo booted with a underscore for a few seconds, so does my 980 pro. I just want to find out how to get rid of it or "fix" the admittedly non-issue. Starting off with how it might be failing doesn't make me confident you know what you're talking about. It's more than likely simply trying to boot from or looking for something else to boot from other than your Windows disk. Thing is, my ssd's are perfectly fine

Replace the hard drive because of a boot device issue?? This is related to UEFI and not booting from the correct boot device until it times out and automatically corrects itself.. no need to purchase a new hard drive dude.

I created the usb drive, but I had to change a few of the commands listed here to get thru this fix but it did not work even though it said it was successful and then i tried again and wasn't able to get thru it a second time. I also tried the startup repair which took about 3 hours and then did not work. Finally i gave up and reinstalled Windows10. I thought i would lose all my files but they ended up still there but moved around into a folder called Windows Old . so at least the files are still there and the computer is working though i will have to redo software installations.

My pc was fine, blinking issue occurred, I tried to fix, couldn't fix, so I removed the SSD, for another that I tried to install a fresh copy of Windows on. It's still happening, even without any drives connected. When I tried to install windows on the new drive it copies all the files during windows install then it restart with the blinking cursor and give the option to install windows again, over and over, windows gets into installation, when it restart, blinking cursor, back to square 1. I have looked online for days no solution.
