You are absolutely correct, the e36 M3 over an e46 M3 is personal preference. I did the same thing, I absolutely love the style of the e36 and the raw edge they have over the e46. Yours is very clean, a beautiful Dakar example. Mine is a sharp Alpine White over Sand Beige. I've driven e46s, they are brilliant, however the e36 just hits all the right buttons for me.

More than 1 year late to comment, but I am proud owner of an NA-spec 1995 E36 M3, and a 2001 E39 M5. I have friends with multiple E46 M3s that I have driven, quite extensively. Of the three, the one that makes me smile the most is the E36 M3. The cable throttle in the E36 provides me with noticeably more feedback and feel than the E46 and E39's drive-by-wire, even though both of those cars have a ton more power. The E36's chassis is lighter and more toss-able than the E46. Does the NA E36 need the ITBs or extra power of the Euro motors? Absolutely not, it's slow-car fast and perfectly sufficient. Lastly, the look of the E36 is like a 90's anime Gundam or Transformer robot, looks cooler the longer you look at it.
The E46 feels bloated and too disconnected, almost like a comfortable highway cruiser. It splits the difference between the E36 and E39 right down the middle, which is why I also own an E39 M5.
I would love to try a Z4MC as my next ///M car.

I have both E36 (US Spec) and E46 (Awesome) ZCP Competition. I like both, but I drive the E36 the most. In fact, I love the E36 so much I also bought a 2nd E36 (techno violet) coupe.

Great reliability, awesome performance and easy to maintain.

I had a e36 evo saloon in estroil blue while my father had a e46 m3 Convertible. I preferred the evo saloon every time

I bought a clean daily 99 black on silver auto cabrio 2010-2016. Then a cleaner (fun/garage only) 99 black on estoril blue auto cabrio 2022- Very fun!!! If I feel like shifting I drive my wife's 96 328i black on black.

E36's are nicer than E46s. the E36s is more driver focused.

I love the E46 and prefer it over the E36 but when it comes to the M3 model the E36 is just better in every way. It looks much nicer in M3 trim over the E46 M3

Hey man, you left out some major things! The e36 is a bit more simple to work on but the interior is complete trash, nothing seems to stay intact lol. The mechanics are completely bullet proof, I’ve had 4 without any real issues. The e46 has the rod bearing and subframe issues which can be very costly, however a good running e46 will out perform the e36 any day and does look better interior and out. However I’m with the e36 too :)

The E46 had only 20 more horsepower than the European version of the E36. US 240bhp, Europe 321bhp. Strange that BM should have sold the M3 in the 'states with so much less power.

I owned an E46 M3. One of the worst cars I've ever owned. Issue after issue. SMG is awful. Vanos broke twice. Rear sub frame was cracked (flawed on all E46 models) not to mention rod bearings. Wish I bought a manual. I did have fun in it but I bought a shitter. Wouldn't buy another.
