In this colored pencil paper guide video I show you how to choose the best paper for wax and oil colored pencils. Wax and oil colored pencils actually behave differently when drawing in general as well as will work good or not so good on certain papers, but really it all boils down to how you choose to blend your colored pencils.

Fabriano makes the best papers for coloured pencils! Accademia 200gsm and Artistico Hot pressed extra white, are my 2 favorites! They also make sketchbooks with hard binding or spiral, that have 160gsm paper, 100% designed for colour pencil drawing!!!

I use Strathmore 400 series smooth bristol and I find the texture is like velvet. It’s smooth, but has just enough tooth to allow a few layers. I can get nice details and use an eraser to pull up highlights. I don’t have much luck with the vellum texture, I find it hard to detail and blend and I can’t pull up highlights like I can with the smooth surface.

6:28 Pastelmat and actually any regular K1000 or 1200 hardware store sandpaper are brutally awesome for drawing vibrant colorful paintings. As you explained these change color pencil to totally different medium where layering in any combination in any sequence is a dream. They eat up your pencils, sure, but the lush colors at the end are gorgeous. so, you'd better use a knife to shape a long head and use the side of the pencil head to color larger areas, this way you will always have pin sharp tip even edge. These require significantly different drawing and coloring techniques. You should dedicate a full video on drawing painting color pencil on Pastelmat or K1000 grit sandpapers. Your artwork and videos are awesome.

The colour pencil illustrator Yvonne Gilbert revealed that her paper of choice were china clay coated print papers, in particular Popset Weave by Wiggins and Teape. Unfortunately their parent company ArjoWiggins is at present in administration and has sold off all their assets. The main source for china clay coated papers is now China. She does do monochrome work with coloured pencils on canson coloured papers with marker pens on top. Her watercolours, so she says, are done on finely sanded ultra thin plywood. I assume she used an acrylic gesso as a watercolour gesso wouldn't have been around at the time. The illustrator Giovanni Casselli also did most of his museum pieces in gouache on finely sanded birchwood. Yvonne Gilbert's favourite pencils were Schwann Stabilo, Caran d'Ache and Prismacolor. Although before the internet it was very difficult to know exactly what you wanted let alone buy it.

Another fabulous video Jessica. This is a very good topic to cover as there are so many different types of paper/ paper brands and lots of mediums to use. It’s really important to use the right paper for what you are trying to achieve & which medium you are using. Thank you for this video - it’s really interesting to see which brands you recommend and like using - lots are the same as mine but I also use some different papers as well! 😊💕

What a great review. Very thorough and informative.
Where in the three categories would you rank Fabriano Artistico, Extra White, Hot Pressed 140lbs?

Thank you much for this wonderful very informative video because I was looking for a video that tells about the best paper for colored pencils without using solvents, do you use solvent and any sketchbook recommendations for colored pencils. I don't use solvent. Please reply, God bless and lots of love from India. HAPPY NEW YEAR. 😊

This is an outstanding video! It's now clearer to me that furry creatures would probably do better on vellum, but how about botanical florals? In watercolour, flowers need a lot of patient layering, and from the little I know, in coloured pencils too. Some tooth is certainly good, and it feels good to draw on slightly toothy paper. I just tried coloured pencils on Fluid 100 Hot Press, and I'm not keen: the pencils seem to glide over the paper. Though maybe some people like that feeling. Plus, Fluid 100 isn't a paper I'm ecstatic about even for watercolouring, frankly. In any case, if you have any advice on best paper for botanical flowers (for coloured pencils), I'd be very grateful.
