Schrodinger Equation Explained - Physics FOR BEGINNERS (can YOU understand this?)

EVEN YOU can understand what this fundamental equation of Physics actually means!

Hey you lot, how's it going? I'm back with another Physics video. This time, we're discussing the Schrödinger Equation (yes that's right, Schrödinger of dead/alive cat fame). This equation is the cornerstone of Quantum Physics, also known as Quantum Mechanics. However, it looks like a very complicated equation - so in this video I'll break it down for you. By the time you've finished the video, you'll be an expert in Quantum Physics (disclaimer: probably not lol, but you'll at least know a bit about what's going on).

So what is Quantum Mechanics exactly? Well, it's a theory that serves to describe how the universe works on a very small scale (think atoms, and smaller). At this scale, objects behave very differently to how they do at the scales we're used to. This get extremely weird, and students of Quantum Mechanics are often heard asking "HOW CAN THIS EVEN BE POSSIBLE?!" Unfortunately, nobody knows. However, at least until now, there isn't a single piece of experimental evidence that goes against Quantum Mechanics! If there was, we could reject this weird theory and move on with our lives (or at least modify the theory). But we can't...

The Schrödinger Equation then, explains what happens to what's known as a "quantum state". It describes the behaviour over time of this quantum state, which has to evolve in a very particular way based on the total energy of the state. A full description is in the video - so stop reading this description :D

If you enjoyed the video then please leave a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe! I'll see you soon :)

WTF you are a genius!! I studied electronic engineering as my major. I took quantum mechanics in my third year of college but I NEVER get any FEELING on it... even I finished the course.
This short video really helps me a lot!!

There should be two sections to the video. One where you explain them for general public. The other where you explain a bit elaborately for the science fellas.

Please could you make a video on Navier-Stokes Equations. Many thanks

That was superb. I remember sitting in term1 and the chemistry prof putting it up and I was TOTALLY baffled. Yet in a few short mins you were clear. You have a real gift for teaching.

As someone who fell into the "valley of despair" in the Dunning-Kruger effect graph, which I recently found out wasn't even from the study in the first place, one time, discovered that the juicy part of science is in the maths and set a goal to learn what 1 part of a complex scientific equation means every day, this is perfect.

Parth G: Can you understand Schrödinger's equation?

Me: Probably.

Thanks for delivering such a weird equation in simple way.

Keep it up

Man, once again you cleared out hours or even days of searching and puting info together in a very short amount of time. Keep up the good work, your chanel is one of my favourite.

This guy is amazing!! I'm in class 9th and I'm little bit interested in quantam Mechanics but i understand it more easily!! Salute to this guy !! Once again salute !!

The workarounds are so juicy, it takes so much work to understand them, but understanding them unlocks the secrets to all the handwavey things they taught you in high school, like why do we just ignore inner shell electrons for the most part?

Nice work explaining sophisticated physics equations. I also liked your other video on Maxwell's equation (Div. B=0), which helped me see the idea behind not having magnetic monopole. Thanks, indeed, and keep up the good work. 👍👍

You are doing great work by making physics fun and mainstream !✌

When you went into the n-body problem, my thoughts shifted to lots of atoms, not multi-electronic systems. Revisiting the fundamentals is it's own reward.

Wow, this was such a good explanation. My initial thoughts on this is that the Hamiltonian Operator is kind of crazy, like how you ever know the total energy of the system? Guess I will have to watch a video on that now..down the rabbit hole..

Thanks Partha for giving me lucid explanation of Schrodinger equation, I ran through several videos pertaining to quantum physics, I couldn't comprehend the equation 🎉🎉

Many thanks, Parth. Great stuff - a wonderfully accessible introduction. Amazing to think it is nearly 100 years since he postulated this equation.
