Due to depression, I had problems brushing my teeth in my school time. The routine of going to school helped me, to think of brushing in the morning. But on weekends and on holidays, I wouldn‘t brush at all. So I brushed once a day at most. But still, I‘ve never once had a cavity in my life. I consider myself very grateful for that. Now I am taking good care of myself and my teeth though!

As someone who only brushes 10 minutes before going to the dentist, I can confirm. I am dead.

If anyone here struggles with mental health and finds it hard to brush your teeth or take care of yourself and you still do, I just want you to know that I’m so proud of you and your strength. You’re an amazing person who deserves nothing but love and happiness, if nobody’s told you this today, I love you and am grateful that you’re still around :)

Thank you for all the content you post about teeth and oral health and hygiene and how you explain things. I have MDD and ADHD and with those issues I have a REALLY REALLY hard time finding the energy or will power to brush my teeth, seeing your videos and knowing that you’re one of the few dentists out there who wouldn’t look at my teeth and automatically assume I’m lazy or downright gross makes me feel so much more confident and comfortable when I do brush and take care of my oral health. Thank you for everything you do

Due to severe depression and addiction, I didn't brush my teeth for around 11 years. (Okay, maybe a handful of times, when my teeth were particularly sore). I've been regularly brushing my teeth for a month now, and it's really nice. 😊

... My little sis needs to be studied by scientists. She apparently has gone like 5 years without brushing her teeth and only using Antiseptic Listerine in the morning.

Your videos made me actually start brushing my teeth and I am proud to announce I have not had bleeding gums in two weeks!

Yea please never stop brushing your teeth. I was an addict and even with brushing and trying to take care of my teeth. I ended up with a ton of cavities and in conjunction with the drugs ruining my teeth and my family has a history of tooth decay and loss, I ended up having to get my teeth pulled and get dentures at the very very young age of 30. And yea I didn't die after not brushing my teeth for a while. Always talk to your dentist about the best approach to your situation and I'm sure they will have some advice for you.

Here's a combination of what me (someone who struggles with dental hygeine) and qualified dentists give as advice, just for whoever needs it:

Threats don't work well. If you're a parent, you need to get your kid/s in the habit by teaching them and enforcing brushing. It's also much easier for them to remember if you set up a specific bedtime.

Tooth decay is caused by the acid that bacteria makes when you eat. Eating whenever you're hungry gives the bacteria more chances to rot your teeth.

There are chewable tablets called _dental disclosure tablets_ that make your mouth a deep purple. The acid, however, will be bright pink, highlighting any areas that you missed.

You only need a small amount of toothpaste for it to fully work. After all, it's the brushing that removes the acid. Toothpaste just makes it more effective because of the flouride.

Spitting and not rinsing allows floruode to stay on your teeth longer, preventing more acid from building up.
