Good explanation for a short, anyone interested in a full explanation, here you go.

Camshafts have three(sometimes four with things like V-TEC) variables you can play with, timing, camshaft lift, and camshaft duration.

Tech like VVT use a spiral spline that can rotate from the linear motion along the spiral, like a worm gear to change the timing of the camshafts.

This can compensate for restrictions that appear at higher RPM due to the physical speed of the moving air or how much pressure/vacuum is present.

Camshaft lift controls how far the poppet valves open at the top of the cam. At low rpm, the air is moving slowly, and it doesn't have much inertia.

So you don't want the already slow air to go back out because the intake valve is still open when the piston reached BDC(bottom dead center). At high RPM, the air is moving fast, and if the valves don't open far enough in time it restricts the engine, reducing the total air intake, and power.

For exhaust valves, they need to be open enough that exhaust gases can freely exit the combustion chamber, or else that restriction reduces power and fuel economy.

The width of the camshaft determines how long the valves are open, and effects idle, low throttle power and top end power, as well as efficency.

At low rpm, a lot of width can create overlap between strokes, but at high rpm this gives the air more time to get inside of the engine.

A high lift plus high duration forces the valves to open and close quicker than normal, this increases friction and makes the idle unstable.

In general, the less aggressive the camshaft, the more stable it is at lower rpm and the more efficency it is. The more aggressive, the higher friction it has and the more power it makes at higher RPM. It's a trade off.

There's a lot more to the valvetrain and different types, but camshafts remain the same.

Very good video, couldn’t help but notice that the valves are missing the piston head in one of the animations though 🤣 I know it’s not the guys fault just found it funny

More Air More Heat that's why Manufacturer always recommend Rich than Lean that can damage your engine.
