I grew up with my mother using her good china and table linens for dinner every week after church. She always said, "What's the point of having beautiful things if you never use them?" She never worried about my brother and me using these fragile items. She felt like it was an important learning experience for us, and at the end of the day, it was "just stuff" and her family was more important. It's a valuable lesson that applies to so many areas of life. Loved this video! ♥️

I feel like a letter opener would be a classy way to open all of my Amazon boxes haha!

I remember as a child, my family would take a Sunday drive. Anyone else remember this ritual? Sometimes, we would stop at a country inn restaurant to have dinner. It was so elegant! White tablecloths and napkins, proper place settings, and even finger bowls! I remember how captivated I was by the formality. I still love dining formality but rarely experience it these days due to outside influences. (Bad company really does corrupt good character.) When my grandchildren first came along, while they were still small enough to be in a high chair, I employed the finger bowl concept to clean them up after a meal. I would bring a large bowl of warm water mixed with a little bit of soap to their high chair tray and helped them wash their hands in it. They were mesmerized by the experience and I think it got their little hands cleaner than just using a wash cloth.

We always use our Villeroy and Boch china every day - my daughter too, people say to her why do you let your seven year old use it and her reply is "how will she appreciate the nice things in life if they are not part of it" and after all you can always replace a plate.

I've been wrestling with my lifelong habit of saving the good stuff for special occasions that almost never happen. Since I turned 65, I keep asking myself how much later I think I'll be saving that stuff! 😮

Several years ago I started collecting beautiful vintage Italian bed linens. My women friends are stunned that I actually sleep on them. Their mouths drop when I tell them I wash, starch, and iron the linens before they go on the bed. Hubby loves it. He says he feels as if he is sleeping in an elegant bed in a beautiful Italian villa.

I would add jewelry here as well. I tend to go to my 'same old' earrings and leave my beautiful pieces in the box.

I always let my youngest daughter use my fine bone china tea set for her tea parties when she was little, she took very good care of it and now owns it. She still has fond memories of those days. x

We use delicate floral fine bone china every day for every meal. It’s all completely mismatched, collected one or two pieces at a time, from goodwill/junk stores. Beautiful teacups and saucers, they break sometimes, but I don’t worry about it. I can find them at estate sales for a dollar. Sometimes the men in the house don’t like it, but there’s also a set of rustic wooden dinnerware they can use if they like. Every day is an elegant day. It’s other-worldly. Visitors think I’m a little bit crazy.

You are so right! I tend to leave my elegant things for an "occasion"... when every day we wake up healthy and happy is an occasion worth celebrating and being our best! Thanks for the reminder!

Seriously, this is so meee.. I love to use all my fancy cups and plates, which people often save for occasional events.. but I don’t really understand why people just buy it and not use I am always soo excited to use new stuff and just experience the happiness and that beautiful feeling 😋

Jennifer, I HAVE TO ADMIT I AM GUILTY! I love nice tablecloths, china, letter openers, you name it! I have discovered that my 60-hour work week is a major reason for my lack of being a better homemaker. I wish I could work an 8-hour day and come home, but unfortunately as an employee in the medical field, it isn't likely to happen. I was an English literature major before I switched over to nursing. I long for the days when I could spend a few hours reading and sipping hot tea. My friends in college thought I was a nut case because my idea of fun was to go to a bookstore that had a cafe and stay for 5-6 hours reading and studying. Sadly, I haven't done that in years and it makes me sad. Still, I love your videos and I hope one day I can incorporate some of your beautiful suggestions into my

I dont own a letter opener, fountain pen, nice table cloths or napkins, or nice bath products, but I do wear my nice clothing every day and we use our nice dishes once a week.

I love having my little 3 yo niece over. She sits at the table with pretty china plates and clothe napkins and candles. Then she snuffs out the candles at the end with the candle snuffer. She feels like a grown up with her big cousins.

I own:
-One teacup
-Nice clothes worn on a daily basis (many are handmade by me!)
-Luxurious bath products (if Lush counts)
-working on my posture!
-classic books, but they are behind cupboard doors because I don’t like the look of bookshelves—they are so messy. I am currently reading Little Women!

I don’t own:
-A letter opener
-A fountain pen/really nice pen
-A set of teacups (I do own one!)
-Nice dinner plates (we have one set of white Corelle dishes for everything)
-A tablecloth
-Cloth napkins

Guess I’m not as elegant as I thought. We are minimalists with a clean, Scandinavian style—not Victorian at all.

One thing I do use that wasn’t mentioned is linen handkerchiefs

“Ma said, ‘Special dishes are for special people, not special occasions.’”—From season 2 of Little House on the Prairie :) It’s one of my favorite quotes from the series, and made me totally rethink my use of our “special dishes”.

I would love to have a beautiful letter opener (I’m one of those Barbarians lol) and invest in some lovely skin care and body products.

Fun video!
I’ve learned so much from your channel!

It’s absolutely possible to improve your penmanship at any age. One way to get a prettier print is to slant your script ever so slightly rightwards. Another tip is to aim for rounder formation of your vowels. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but small changes do make an appreciable difference. Go for it, Jennifer! And as always, thanks for posting.

I had a bar of lemon verbena soap (my favorite scent ever) that I saved for ages because it smelled so pretty I didn't want to use it up. By the time I did, the scent was practically gone. I never deny using my beautiful bath products anymore, and it makes the every day routine of getting ready so much nicer! Related so much to the letter opener, lol.
