Can A.I. Make Pasta Better Than a Pro Cook? | Eric Kim vs. ChatGPT | NYT Cooking

Can a robot write a recipe? And if so, will it be … good? We’re about to find out. Welcome to Chef vs. A.I., which is exactly what it sounds like. In this installment, Priya asked ChatGPT to write an Eric Kim recipe, giving it a couple of parameters, before cooking through the A.I.-produced process. Then, once the fire department left, Eric got to work improving the recipe with some personal — dare we say human? — tweaks. Which was better? Watch to find out.

I think you should all give Sohla and Ham all the ingredients without any chat GPT instructions and do a side by side comparison on the dishes they came up with vs the AI

Claire Saffitz against AI would be a hoot. Watching her seethe inside could be entertaining and educational.

I say Sohla or Ham next that’ll be a hoot or Yewande!

I love this concept for a series! But we saw that Eric made more smaller changes than just the three and it was great, so I think the "only three changes" rule is unneeded.

Erin Jeanne McDowell- any baking recipe. I'd say something with a technical aspect like a merangue pie or maybe even macarons. But definitely something baking/pastry related because of all the precision and measured amounts. It would be a real stretch of the AI.

This was fun. I would love to see Melissa Clark go against Chat GPT. I want to know what does the older generation of recipe developers feel about it.

This may seem very random but I find the color coordination between Eric and Priya's outfits very pleasing.

I love these types of ideas. I'm a cook, graduate of the culinary institute of America in Hyde Park, and full-time recipe writer. A lot of recipe writers and folks leaving comments seem to think AI is absolutely terrible in the realm of recipes. For the profession, I totally agree, but in terms of the quality of AI output, I think we need to be wary of how much better it is getting. I'm one of the nerds who has been measuring how some GPT-4 recipe prompts today are comparing to identical prompts sent to GPT-3 going back to February. The quality of the output for recipes from generative AI for something like "South Carolina-Style BBQ Sauce" has improved dramatically. I suppose my point is that regardless of how you feel about the technology, how it performs today is very different from, and much worse than, how from how it will perform in 6 months or 6 years. Feel free to reach out if anyone wants to see some of the comparison tables for ChatGPT vs. Human-generated recipes that I have put together! I've mostly been looking at regional BBQ sauces around the U.S., just because it was somewhat easy to standardize.

I'd love to see Sohla or Vaughn against the AI. I love Sohla's creativity and I just love watching Vaughn. I keep bookmarking his recipes... and then ordering takeout and watching more.
