Hyundai i30 Hybrid 2024 review: Sedan | New petrol-electric small car targets Toyota Corolla Hybrid

When it comes to the Small Car segment, one model has ruled the roost when it comes to hybrids: the Toyota Corolla – but the 2024 Hyundai i30 Sedan Hybrid is looking to change things up. In fact, it's looking to do so in a very aggressive way: by playing the value card – hard.

That's right; the i30 has engaged a price war with the Corolla, one that Hyundai hopes will deliver it supremacy in hybrid Small Car space. Point being, when it comes to drive-away pricing, there's little to seperate the two models. However, is claiming the win with its richer list of standard equipment.

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis drives the i30 Sedan Hybrid at its Australian launch to find out if it is the best of the bunch in reality. Of course, in doing so he puts its 'self-charging' hybrid powertrain – including a 1.6-litre petrol four-cylinder engine and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission – to the test.

Just bought one. Only 520km on the clock so far. Really happy with it so far apart from a few annoying features. I used to think gen 3 Magnas were a decent driving experience for the cost. But this thing blows them out of the water. I'm 187cm tall and dare i say 155kg and i have no trouble getting in and out of this thing (i wouldn't want to sit in the back though). However it's headroom in the back is still much better than the horrible Mazda 3. Probably one of the best value for money vehicle on the road in Australia at the moment.

I think that the 1500km from 42L claim is wrong. I think it would be more in the 1070km range.

My 2010 Prius with mag wheels and Kumo eco tyres ( couldn’t source the originals during covid) does 5 litres per 100 klm all day every day not sparing the Go pedal around town and 4K road trips

The Corolla hybrid sedan will still outsell this as this doesn’t have a ANCAP safety rating, which rideshare operators and many fleets require a 5 star rating
I personally also way prefer the look of the Corolla sedan and I think most people will
It hope this sells well for Hyundai

At 6:01 of the video is reported that car has 16.7 cubic feet or 474 liters of trunk or boot space. This is the typical FAKE GOURMET sedan, the one that comes ready to be swallowed by an SUV. In the ranking of decent sedans (TOP 500 SEDANS) with a trunk capacity above 500 liters or 17.6 cubic feet it does not enter.
