David's Fate is WORSE Than Death | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Ending Theory

The ending of cyberpunk edgerunners had us wishing David was still alive. But what would that look like for David?

Adam smasher is what happens when a sociopath goes full cyborg. What if Arasaka could fabricate someone just as strong but completely brainwashed? The ending of cyberpunk: edgerunners made it painfully clear that no one has a happy ending in Night City. In this short video, I'll present my case that David is still alive, but his fate is worse than death.

After the rollarcoaster that was the cyberpunk edgerunners ending, I believe it can still get even darker. David is alive, for several reasons. But him being back most likely means getting manipulated to serve Arasaka. He could be used to take out Lucy which would be a fate far worse than death. Maybe Adam Smasher did him a favor at the end of episode 10.

I'm Bumper Jumper, dedicated to exploring the deepest and most profound stories in anime, video games, movies, and tv shows. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this ending fan theory in the comments below! Any other edgerunners fan theories you're aware of?

Adam Sandler flatlinging David was the most traumatic thing I've seen since Keanu Reeves T-posed V to death

Considering how brutal the world of Cyberpunk is, David's ending is considered to be a happy one, he saved his lover, saved his remaining friend Falco, went up against two massive companies who literally shit their pants by just being there. He died leaving a mark in Night City and be remembered as a cyberpunk who fought two corrupted companies.

The thing that I noticed while rewatching the show is that at no point David shows resentment towards Smasher, sure he killed 'Becca, but David doesn't show any hatred towards him.
At this point, it isn't personal like it was for V. David knows the world of Mercs, he knows how Nightcity works. He just accepts his fate and once his loved ones are safe, fights with all his might to last long enough for them to get away.

He knew he wouldn't beat Smasher, but he wanted to give him a run for his chrome.
He aknowledge his imminent lose and death, just like V in "Don't Fear the Reaper" ending.

Even fucking smiling after being rendered helpless and at gunpoint from Smasher. He knows he fought the Legend Adam Smasher and held him in place for a good 5 minutes.
He went out a fucking badass

David is a speedrunner rushing to his Ending in just a few months after turning to 18.
A true Street kid gamer.

When Adam Sandler stood over David and told him "Its Sandin Time" I jumped out of my chair with shock and awe and the respect being thrown between them after a good fight. I damn near cried

Something we should consider is how David’s final scene and moments were portrayed very similarly to silverhands death in game during the arasaka tower bombing, the shot is almost identical and for a studio that brought us edgerunners to do that on purpose indicates there’s deeper meaning than simply paying homage. they’re telling us there are parallels between the game and show in terms of what will happen next

I’d like to think that Adam Smasher had respect for David and his endurance, with him saying, ”I had some fun after all, you could prove an interesting construct.” Saying that right before shooting him shows that he knows Arasaka would make David their personal slave, Adam having his own decade plus contract with Arasaka knows how Arasaka loves their assets But he knew David wouldn’t be able to escape or end his contract like he can. Ending his suffering before it can begin.

Is it bad that I'm more upset about becca dying than David? She was probably the best person out of all of them and tried so hard to stop David from going off the deep end

As soon as I didn't see him completely dead my first thought was that they'll bring him back later as a "construct" like Adam mentioned, and that he'd have some remnant of him left at a key moment. Predictable, but the whole show is and still is good. I hope we see him and Lucy again someday. I imagined even Lucy coming back to "save" him so that they can both die together.

Smasher mercy killing david out of respect is honestly one of most wholesome things this franchise saw

I haven’t seen any comments about it but I don’t believe we’ll be seeing David again. In one of the earlier episodes Lucy asks David what is his dream instead of trying to live up to his moms dream of being at the top of the tower and Maine’s dream of him being the best cyber runner. In the end David reaches the top, becomes the baddest cyber runner, and gets Lucy to the moon, thus completing his dream of making their dreams a reality. I believes this completes his story and his death gives so much weight to ending. Bringing him back would be a real shame.

David died. His signature drink in afterlife says it all

If they do a season 2 with David alive it would be very difficult. David dying at the end of season 1 is what gave the final scenes its massive emotional climax. Night city is gritty and unforgiving, no one is special. If David's death is taken back in the wrong way it could destroy everything that made the show good in the first place. This does not mean its impossible for a season 2 with David alive but its going to have to be written really really well. If they do decide to bring back David and pull it off, its going to be epic.

As much as I’d like to have David Alive again I feel like it’d ruin the ending of the season if he turns out to be alive. So idk what they could do I’m mixed on a second season cause they kinda wrapped up the story of the characters for the season and with only Falco and Lucy left.

I'm going to be depressed until they announce season 2. ( with or without David doesn't matter )

Another reason for arasaka to be after Lucy if they actually keep David alive is that she was the reason David didn’t turn cyberpsycho. She brought him back when they kissed while escaping smasher and that’s why he was fully himself when they finished fighting
