I can remember trying to learn songs years ago realising they were too hard and coming back to them later on and being able to play them, you get better, sometimes you can't see it but you do get better.

"You earn the gear" that hit me... Quality advice 👌💯

When I started playing 30 years ago I didn’t even have money for my own guitar and had to borrow a friends guitar. His parents had money so he had like 3 guitars. I worked part time and used my own money to pay for lessons and used the guitar my friend lent me for a whole year. During that year I put a 1989 Charvel Jackson fusion custom on layaway and slowly paid it off in 9 months. I played the living hell out of just that one guitar for 10 years before I ever got another one. 30 years later I have many boutique and custom guitars and I play everyday, and sometimes twice a day, but I still have that 1989 Charvel Jackson fusion custom tucked away safely inside it’s case, and I still pull it out every so often and play it and maintain it. I agree 100% that you earn the gear by being a player, not a collector.

Wasn't it Rick who compared it to the saying, "Beware the man with one gun, for he surely knows how to use it." Get one decent electric and one decent acoustic to start. And play play play

The only thing I’d say about gear is that having just enough to give you a wicked tone that makes it fun and more motivating to play. Yes, practice clean too, but you can’t play Panama without some

Gotta love the look of that Strat's fretboard.

+1 Setup the "$50" guitar. Also have an amp/pedal that you don't need to fiddle with to get the tone you want (use presets or tape on the knob settings) so you can grab the guitar tune up and play -- often a ten minute practice session every day is better than an hour every six days. Fixed bridges/blocked trems cut down on the distractions too.

I remember when I was a beginner, it definitely is so important to keep going and change so many negative habits. Awesome work!

"You earn the gear, through hours of practice." I like that. I have to remember that next time I'm tempted to get more gear but I haven't been putting enough practice time in! BTW, I got your Rock Beginner course, I'm excited to go through it!

I know I'm just a nobody on the internet, but that intro was amazing 🤘

I started off with a strat copy, 15 years later bought an epiphone les paul, and just 2 weeks ago my pops gave me a slightly used Ibanez that played like a dream.

Even Jimi Hendrix said too much diggin' will stop you creatively. Diggin' meaning being too much in awe of other musicians. Freddie Kings Stumble is still one of the cornerstones of my playing, and whatever level I achieve, it still gives me the thrill of accomplishment. That one song has enough challenge for me, because the feel of it surpasses the technicality of it. ;-)

Video suggestion. Ways to practice with an injury.

I never improved more as a player as when I had maybe just one pedal, a small tube amp with no reverb, a guitar and a total beater acoustic that could barely stay in tune. Now I’m rather spoiled with gear and I feel plateaued. But life did indeed happen... school, career, family

This is a really great video alltough there are some things I would've added for example how you practice matters more than the time you put in it. For the most part in my beginner stage I didn't really paid that much attention to timing. Start using a metronome for scales and even songs as you learn them you will thank yourself in the longrun. Another good tip is to tap the beats or every other beat with your foot. Its harder than you think but it wastly improoves your ability to play. These are things that will make your life easier when you start playing with other pepole. And another thing music theory is really useful for understanding and connecting things. If you start learning it even the basic understanding of how the major scale works with chords and modes will clear up a lot of confusion that you might have and make jamming a lot easier. Theese are some things that I wish I would've done. I say this as a musician who used to gig before this virus thing and is tought by professionals. Other than that this list says it all. I would've loved to know this information as a beginner. Thank you for this!

Paul Gilbert and Dimbag Darryl are why I play guitar. Wanting to shred like them, but starting with Am-G-D songs was rough but worth it.
I was lucky enough to take a guitar basics class in highschool as a music elective. Signing up i thought "easy A". At the time I knew the cowboy chords, and a few simple riffs. The class forced me to finally take on Barre chords, and all the variation chords like sus, 7ths, etc.
Our teacher started us on songs from the 50s and we worked our way towards modern pop songs.
Learning to do the basics *well* is nearly as important as having fun playing.

If I could tell 17y.o. me these things I'd be a better player today. But I am still proud I taught myself to play from recording songs on tape and doing the rewind-play that bit-rewind-play that bit again, repeat repeat, and using an old Mel Bay chord book I found.

Very much a beginner but there is some merit to the "noise generators" still I think. Even VERY new, I still find myself kicking on the fuzz/delay/drive (only 3 I have) to noodle and find something that just sounds cool. Breeds some creativity early on that lacks with just a basic tone. Does it hamper my actual practice? Probably but it also causes me to pick up my guitar on times when I otherwise wouldn't.

Also to anyone on the fence, Rock and Roll Bootcamp is GREAT value for the money!

RB, I think what you're trying to say is that you can be "dramastically demotivated" at times.
